Lemon trees -- or at least the one in my living room -- also have 3 cm long needle sharp spikes all over. They're mean trees.
I expect that's because your lemon is still a sapling. Other fruit trees that grow needle sharp spikes while they're saplings are apples, pears and apricots.

Actually, 3cm is nothing for a lemon tree. I've seen up 8-9cm on a grown lemon tree.
What's strange to me is that "citron" is the French word for lemon. I have no idea what "citron" is in this context.
Bitter lemon is my guess, because the grocery store lemon isn't wild.
