For those who don't know, every time a monarch caterpillar molts, he steps out of his skin but his face mask stays intact after he rubs it off his nose. He'll eat his skin but won't touch that mask...and yeah--this is a monarch caterpillar face mask what got shed after a molt.

Even the flap over the mandibles, the mandibles themselves, and the silk spinneret have skin that gets shed, but it's HARD skin.
