Welcome to # for Sunday, May 29, 2022!

Good morning/afternoon/evening and welcome to today's #. It's a rainy, coldish day outside today. I'm keeping an eye on Justus today while my parents are away. Today is Paper Clip Day, appreciation of the invention of the paperclip, one of the most useful tools for office/paperwork! Or the nasty "Clippy" from old versions of Microsoft Word. And don't forget the Paperclip AI Thought experiment where an AI maximizes the output of paperclips and finally "first all of earth and then increasing portions of space into paperclip manufacturing facilities".

So, what's the tool you use the most or the most useful invention for you? Or share some secrets of paper clip art

Seems like everyone got already munched by the paperclip AI..

I got terrier shaped paperclips. They're like having Bennie with me all the time!

Most useful computer-related tool: the right-click menu in Windows. People in my workplace think I'm a genius with software because my mantra is "when in doubt, right-click." 😀

Most useful analog tool? Pliers. As I get older and my grip when opening all that tamper-proof packaging is less-reliable, a small pair of pliers is an important piece of equipment in my kitchen.

I loved Clippy! he or she was the only friendly thing about Microsoft when I was at work! For simple tools I like rubber bands, paper clips, & staples. Have no idea what AI paperclips are. I think, was thinking yesterday that the Allen wrench was pretty nifty...This morning we talked to Qs family( what family he will talk to) in Pakistan. After I was telling him of all the future promises made when I was a child I think the video call is the best....no way they can come here nor we go there but we can at least see and talk to them, Also carry the laptop and show them the cats, the garden and house....they are in Karachi and the green and sea we have are only from movies for them. Of all the tech things the video call the best.
Dean Calahan diaspora
If I need a paper clip, I can't find one, even if I have had forethought and planning to have a little box of paperclips somewhere. If I don't need one, they are all over the place, necessitating corralling them and putting them in a little box...

Good morning! been up for a while but yawn... busy weekend. It's still colder than normal here. Grateful for bits of sunshine.

Paper Clip Day? I love the coloured paper clips...

For utility, I find binder clips (all sizes, usually black) more useful...
Whuffo diaspora
Never can find one when I need one. Whole boxes of them disappear into a parallel universe when I think "Paperclip".

So, what’s the tool you use the most or the most useful invention for you?

I'm a big fan of the flush toilet and indoor plumbing... oh, and toilet paper! 😀

Oh, and I liked Clippy. I thought he was one of the few good things to come out of Microsoft's headquarters. ;)
So, you're a paperclip wrangler, eh @Dean Calahan? ;)
Karl Auerbach diaspora
I more frequently use paper clips to push computer reset buttons or open battery compartment doors than I use them to hold papers together.

I used to have a super-embossing tool that was a paper-clip-less paper-clipper - it would emboss pages together by creating a staple-sized dent in all the pages. Worked really well on small bundles of same-kind paper.
Richard diaspora
Hm. That would be my stainless steel coffee mug. Plus, as, @V. T. Eric Layton points out, sanitary sewers totally rock.

Also, the solution to the paperclip AI is to set other AIs loose that have goals orthogonal to it and let them duke it out relegating us humans to insignificance and left to our usual horrible pursuits with the exception of occasionally becoming collateral damage in the AI wars.
Michele Hax diaspora
Cool image, @Clara Listensprechen! All you people that have disappearing paper clips gather around. I'm thinking magnetic paper clips for the refrigerator is a good invention.
Christoph S diaspora
@Karl Auerbach ah yes, I recently used one to fix my CD tray in the computer
Joseph Teller diaspora
I remember there was an SF story someone wrote once where aliens in the 1960s decided that the surefire way to collapse the governments of the world was to introduce a metal eating virus that specifically at the grade of steel used in paperclips and staples.... thus de-organizing tons of files and documents and how business and government operated....
Breadboard! Wish I had thought of that.
Don Little diaspora
I remember Clippy. At one time MS came up with a little waggly tailed search dog. A cat we had back then loved him. She figured out which key to press to bring him up, and would watch him for minutes at a time.
@Joyce_Donahue I too like the right click. Serves the same purpose on a Linux box.
tom grzyb diaspora
Yep, I use them for opening CD trays. I seem to be out of them right now...
Cheerful binders, awesome! If I ever buy any it'll be that kind. Paper clips, as colourful as they may be, the last I bought were sometime in the mid-noughts, 2007 or so. I still have too many. Sending paper around has become rarer, and the instructions "do not use any clips or binder" more frequent from places that accept paper in envelopes.

The last library I worked in had those with rounded edges, as to not pierce the valuable paper. Those were nice, attention to detail. Like the one in the far right: https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fde.academic.ru%2Fpictures%2Fdewiki%2F66%2FBueroklammern.jpg&f=1&nofb=1
Following unconfirmed rumours @Rodrigo Mesa there might be a sizable collection of tiny yet valuable pieces of such scrap metal in a box labelled "unsorted things" here somewhere. 😀
