Welcome to # for Sunday, May 1st, 2022!

Good morning/evening/afternoon everyone and welcome to today's #. Happy first day of May! It's also Labor Day in Germany.
While many people follow certain May traditions, from erecting up (and stealing others) maypoles to activities like riding a bike together in a group and of course drinking beer! Or, as "normally" in Berlin, participating in riots…or demonstrations
My parents meet with another couple and their little dog and will go for a walk with Justus and having coffee afterwards.

May day, people dancing around the maypole

So what are your plans for today? I will read a book and relax a bit

Happy May Day! After church I will probably spend the rest of the day reading and listening to music. Cloudy, breezy and unseasonably cool here, so not a great day to be outside.
Like @Jodi K I have a pot of tea here and enjoy the day so far - much cooler than yesterday, sun hidden behind layers of cloud. Been commenting on old checkin post threads and had 菜包加蛋 "filled bun with vegetables and egg" lunch.

Anyone seen pictures of the total eclipse of yesterday?

Happy May Day!

@Muse something for you today... 😄

Woo hoo, May Day parades around here take place later in the month. The biggest one will be in Victoria on May 23rd but some smaller communities are having them too. Here at the village the Alexandra Festival is back on May 27! I can hardly wait. It's a simple day long festival at Camp Alexandra (community centre) with artisans, a variety of entertainers (love the Morris dancers), food vendors, merchants (hope my favourite hat maker will be there!), music, etc. Once upon a time there were organized pillow fights for kids and as well as adults.

@su ann lim I'm very envious that you still have a festival. I really miss May day celebrations.

It's Labor Day here. Me, I just stay home and wander around the house.

About to drink some coffee and continue re-reading a book. Will probably manage to do some work later on.
Dogs walked, Paper read, coffee consumed, bills paid.
Now doing this.
Happy May 1.

Happy May Day! Growing up outside of Vancouver I remember having celebrations that included the May pole.

Another cloudy day but we need the rain so…
What I'm doing on here, on May Day, is inserting a bit of US anti-socialist history that Labor Day is deliberately NOT on May 1st and is in the autumn instead. Conservatives will berate anyone celebrating May 1 in any context, additionally. What I intend to do offline is re-watch Jeannette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy in their movie "Maytime". I don't do that every year, but speaking of history, it's just the thing to do on a day like today.

Putin is trying to force the rest of the world back to the 1940s so there's nothing like a 1937 romantic movie to set that off with. Besides, Jeannette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy were superstars of that era.

So what are your plans for today?
Hmm... do some laundry, change the bed sheets, empty/clean the litter box, and then probably sit around and stew on the fact that I cannot pay my household bills this month.

So...

HAPPY MAY DAY!

Pretty soon it'll be Cinco De Mayo! Oh, boy!
Oh, and pretty May flowers for everyone!
su ann lim diaspora
@V. T. Eric Layton thank you for the May Flowers!

@Joltrast Alexandra Festival happens to be a festival in May, not truly a May day festival i.e. no Maypole 😕, but I'm not complaining since it only exists thanks mainly to the efforts of community volunteers. There are May Day type events throughout the month in other near by places (no maypoles) but none today (I think.)

To celebrate, after getting my car fixed, I went to the nursery and picked up a few bedding plants - nasturtiums and herbs - (it's still too early but I couldn't resist) and a couple bags of soil. Also, there is sunshine today and Zach has two buddies spending the day with us - hurray!
Pluspora checking in, still alive, still federated, and just heard a surprise new shortage announced on Oklahoma News Report (ONR) via OETA (PBS)--spring veggies from nurseries. Planting the veg garden is another fave activity in May here, but I mostly start from my own seeds (I'm a seed saver, after all, and swap seeds with people). I expect commercially available water shortage out west has a lot to do with that, but since I also know how water-intensive semiconductor chip-making is, AND that Silicon Valley is also out west, I shouldn't be surprised at any of this. Alarmed, definitely. Surprised, hardly.

Nothing much planned for today. A bit of shopping for kitty litter and cat treats, then home. I'll likely head down to the beach for a bit of reading. I'm re-reading Bill Bryson's "Notes from a Small Island" again for the umpteenth time.

@Cass M Didn't we have a holiday in May that was once called Empire Day? Is Victoria Day what that morphed into?
I can almost remember Nanaimo celebrating the first of May years ago, but I don't think they do now.

Late to the party, but hello, all.

Happy May Day! Since it's tomorrow in parts of the world already, may I be the first on Checkin to say "Eid Mubarak!"

Also, Happy Rosh Chodesh Iyar!

Did some laundry today, did some dishes, got on the rowing machine for a bit... so far a busy day.

...and more to come.
Is it Eid already?! Good heavens--Eid Mubarak to all my Muslim friends!!!
Muse diaspora
@su ann lim Oooh! Thank you for the pretty flowers!

I was raised to be scared of certain things that just aren't scary at all. I remember my mother warning me about the dangers of Dungeon's and Dragons. Another one was to be afraid of Communists. Here in Australia the Communists are very open and active. Around my village and in Melbourne I have been seeing photocopied posters in rainbow colours for their semi-annual (?) conference with a sausage sizzle this weekend. I know a few sweet older people who participate.

What we really need to be worried about is when the Communists start playing Dungeons & Dragons...actually, that might be fun!
My May 1st ended yesterday evening with a visit in the # Day Spa. What a good way to end the day after a relaxing weekend!

Also, while we were chatting away, old (West) Berlin traditions in folklore were reenacted, as in "move on, nothing to see here, this is the most peaceful mayday in many years" (police president quote) and our lord mayor was thrown an egg at, leading to the obvious "Giffei" [Giffegg] pun, her real name's Giffey. Here's the totally not newsworthy pictures in a gallery.

Have a good start into the new week!
A lack of maypole, sayest thou, @su ann lim? Can't have that:
