Well who doesn’t have β€œfriends” who pay your way on premier vacations every year, including one costing $500K?! Right? Riiiiight!

The same β€œfriend” just happens to have business on the docket of SCOTUS every year for the last 25 years. I’m sure it’s all a funny coincidence.

I want to have β€œfriends” like this…or maybe I don’t, after all.

if he truly didn't know it was illegal...

he has no business being a Supreme Court Justice, he's clearly unqualified.
Republicans own all the media. Republicans own the judges. Republicans own the senators. I don't believe he's worried
The very nature of the Supreme Court is that EVERY CITIZEN has business before the Supreme Court.

Who doesn't have a dear close friend who buys their parent's house, pay for extensive remodeling, all while letting the parents continue to live there rent and utility free?
debo diaspora
the "buying your parent's house" seems least bad, depending how much was paid. "Viager" (buying the house of an elderly person, yet allowing them to live there until they die) is quite a tradition in France. Cheap, because the date you take possession is so uncertain.
Where can I get my $500K vacation friend and sign off on anything they want
debo diaspora
No, most of it was ridiculous. But the concept of "viager" is OK.

Neither of them is French and it's not common here.
debo diaspora
Nope - highly unusual here, but viager is a well-established and legit practice in France. You make a down payment and continue to pay every year until the person dies and you take title.
debo diaspora
So we have viager - unusual in the US but legit - vs expensive vacations paid for by donor. I strongly object to the latter when not declared.
There is "reverse mortgage here in the states, but what happened here is quite different.
debo diaspora
Yes. But this donor has "more money than God" so should have savvy advisers. Setting up Thomas's mother in a viager arrangement seems eminently wise to me. Spending half a million on a single vacation is just pissing away money.
When you have that much money you can piss a lot away and end up with More than you started with.
debo diaspora
Agreed. There are many things to object to in his spending $$ buying Thomas, but it seems to me that setting up his mom in a viager arrangement is the least (least expensive, most sensible) of them.
