I think Thom Hartmann is right. What they want is total control, including the ability to make others suffer for their amusement. Women are an easy target -- especially if men are in control, as they desire -- but they want to torture men as well. Especially men who protect women or other people they want to torture.

I am not optimistic about the options regarding how to deal with people like this. When we were kids, these people were bullies. The solution then was to stand up to them, even if it meant a black eye or a broken arm, as long as the people in charge -- the teachers, the principal, etc. -- were on the right side. When the principal is as much of a bully as the kid in the playground, that's when we were really fucked.

The drafters of the American Constitution were aware of the kinds of abuses that could come from absolute power and designed the Constitution to protect against that (to a degree; they still loved rich, white land-owners).

What they did not anticipate, at least not adequately, was the effect of psychopathic bullies who will use the rule of law to subvert the rule of law itself. This is the Republican Party.

Evolutionary game theory tells us there will always be a nonzero proportion of psychopaths in society. The only way to defeat this extremely grim future is to make psychopathy completely, 100% maladaptive: Either kill them as soon as they are detected as psychopaths or else then neuter them, both reproductively and in terms of their influence on society: Never let them have any kind of power over anyone.
