All this crowing about job growth in July... but these are not the jobs you are looking for

As someone who is watching job postings, I see tons of jobs for receptionists, retail workers, customer service, warehouse pickers, pay-by-the-word copywriters and the like, but few jobs that even tempt me to take a look. Good jobs that require an education and provide a living wage are not so plentiful. Also, we are far from getting back to the number of jobs there were before COVID.

In a NYT article (probably behind the paywall) I read this quote from someone at a staffing agency: “I think we do have a gap in the jobs that are available and the desire to do those jobs. We know there are tens of thousands of warehouse jobs out there, but standing on your feet for 10 hours a day isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.”

I know my friend in Fl is desperate for a decent job she is doing door dash for 12 hours a day making if a good day $100, killing her & her car in the heat. She has applied for 50 jobs so far....not even a call back

I have picked at a few academic adjunct teaching jobs for teaching writing, but my teaching experience is from 40 years ago. They don't want me - and teaching a class or two a semester is not really full-time work. It's like being a temp. Luckily, I am still picking up online teaching in my field - but the pay is not much. I cringe when the GOP starts talking about cutting Social Security benefits.

Right now I am negotiating with the state about unemployment - they think because I have applied for my paltry pension (even though it takes 90 days to start getting it) that disqualifies me for benefits. I want to know how I defer my bills for 90 days.

And this... a lot of these are second jobs for people already working one job.

Despite all the jobs added, there's still a nationwide teacher shortage. Every employer wants the work but doesn't want to pay for it.

Yeah. A friend went into her local school district office to adjust her children's schedules - when they found out she was a substitute teacher, she was hired as a full-time math teacher on the spot.
