Oh I never knew this about hing (asafoetida):

"Hing helps improve digestion by increasing the activity of digestive enzymes in the stomach and small intestine. It is recommended to add Hing to your regular diet to prevent a number of gastric problems."

Hing is only ever used in very small amounts, a pinch or two at a time*, and is best added to the food or tadka during cooking (rather than used raw).

*some commercial hing powders are cut with other substances so it is not as strong as others. You can always tell by the strength of the aroma.

I have always preferred knee socks, if only because they don't sag and create a lump in your shoes.

My grandfather gave silk stockings to all the women in his life, always from an expensive store like Saks Fifth Avenue. Ithink that began during WWII, when it was an indulgent gift.

I remember the tactile experience of opening the little box, with tissue paper and the delicate silkiness of the stockings. As a little girl, just feeling those stockings made me feel luxurious.

In the 70s, my sister tried to emulate the gift by giving the women in the family a pair of L'eggs... which she chose because they were cheap. It so completely missed the point.
