***Love not the accident, fire, or the incident, but the fact that San Bernardino County Fire is now putting out comments on alternate routes that include dirt roads, and getting stranded in the desert.

I am old enough to remember when it was relatively easy to get paper maps that showed several distinct grades of unpaved road, making it easy to tell which ones were safe (if a bit slow) for regular passenger cars vs. ones that needed 4 wheel drive, high ground clearance, or both.

In particular, I remember at *least* four basic categories of “unpaved” road: “improved” (e.g. gravel-covered) roads suitable for all cars except in really bad weather; regularly maintained dirt roads that were slow but suitable for almost all cars except in bad weather; dirt roads that were only just passable in very good weather in typical passenger cars (and not always pleasantly); and very rough dirt roads suitable for 4 wheel drive or other specialty vehicles only.

Lotsa luck figuring that out with most off-the-shelf map applications these days.
