Serious question: Is anyone making a list of where it may be possible to purchase a *new* car that isn't just spyware on wheels? I've seen the Consumer Reports study but it all just looks like varying degrees of suckiness.

I'd also settle for one that doesn't make it hard to turn all the tracking off permanently. Or maybe someone's got a nifty piece of hardware that can be plugged in to nix all this nonsense?

Just this past weekend, my battery died on my 2018 jeep and I couldn't 1.) Open the trunk to get the jumper cables in the storage compartment under the floor.
2.) The jeep was in a garage with storage above the front of the vehicle and I couldn't even shift it to neutral without a battery to roll it back to get enough space to open the hood completely. So for about 20min I had the hood open by about 4-6 inches and was just barely able to reach in and connect the battery to some jumper cables. That was able to at least get it in neutral and roll it back to open it fully. If it was parked in any tighter of a position, I dont know what I would have done.

Mozilla did a set of 'Privacy Not Included' reviews for major car makers, and largely arrived at the same conclusion which is that they're all fucked.

My take is that the easiest thing to do may just be to disable the modem in any given car and then shop based on the vehicle features that don't use networking.

I'd bet no on the "nifty piece of hardware"; the tracking stuff is largely integrated into the head unit and won't be something you can just send a CAN message or two to shut off (and also you shouldn't really drive with a random doodad plugged into OBD-II anyway; you'll face some very hard questions in the case of an insurance claim).

physically getting to the cellular modem would be a big job and would void your vehicle's warranty, so likely not worth it for a brand new car.

In my newer Ford the 'telemetry box' can be unplugged with no ill effect on anything (no more over the air updates for the infotainment system is the only 'downside', if you can call it that). The box is easy to access in the passenger footwell, no tools required to get at it, just crawl in and pull the plug.

It seems even more common to have always-connected-crap in electric vehicles, which, frankly, sucks.

I physically disconnected the wire to the sharkfin LTE antenna and it's still uploading data to Hyundai. I think there is a separate LTE radio antenna, possibly part of the rearview/windshield assembly, and I'm considering finding a wrecked Hyundai in a junkyard to fully disassemble. If I do it right I could made some "side hustle" money...

You can always unplug/cut the cellular and wifi antennas. Since the metal body of the car inhibits radio signals, the antennas tend to be externally mounted and (relatively) easy to access.

I know it's fairly specific, but as an example of a lesser degree of suckiness, the DCM in the Toyota Tacomas up to 2023 can be disabled by simply removing the fuse. The only negative impact I know of is the loss of the microphone for Bluetooth calls.

Technically, each vehicle has a SMS chip embedded that is responsible for connecting back out. Technically, it might be possible to remove that chip and thus sever the connection to the mothership, but I don't know what the car would do should that ever happen.

I had an older vehicle that had a service recall because 3G network was no longer offered. Worked fine afterwards, but more modern cars are 🤷 .

The only thing I can really think of is to disable the mobile connection (remove SIM card?) and use something like OVMS. Unfortunately, the maturity of OVMS is very low and primarily targets EVs so if you're looking for a solution for an ICE vehicle…yeah.

We've been noting down things that will be difficult (e.g. picking up a cubic yard of compost) and figuring out how to deal with it.

Between bicycling, busses, and borrowing (or possibly renting) cars a couple times a year, it seems completely doable in our town.

It did have Carplay but without a phone the screen did nothing other than show the backup camera and time. Such an awful car but all they had at 2am.

The Dacia Spring is very minimalistic in its features and has a Button to disable online services (at least inside Europe). However the "pre-facelift" version does not have this button.

That might have changed with the 2024 version though.

Ultimately it is probably impossible to get a car without any data connection, especially since features like E-Call are now required.

I think the only viable solution for a brand-new vehicle would be to disable/physically remove the modem from the vehicle. With a Factory Service Manual that should be easy enough, but actually getting the FSM for a new car could be dificult/expensive.

Of course, that may trigger a MIL/CEL, which (at least in parts of CO) is an automatic emissions test fail. And even if that's not an issue, the data may still exist locally somewhere.

AFAIK there are no new vehicles which *don't* record data. I am annoyed by this, as it prevents me from purchasing an EV.

Depending on the manufacturer you could probably go as new as mid-2010's. The mid level German Luxury sedans for example have been fairly slow to bring in "phone home" tech in their more basic trims.

I would also be curious to know how difficult it would be to find and remove the SIM card from some of the newer cars and what functionality do you lose once you do so.

But there's a reason I'm alternating between commuting in a 20 year old car and a 40 year old car, and it is exactly this.

My daily driver is a manual transmission 2007 Toyota Yaris because it’s got an engine, a/c, and nothing else. It’s got as few onboard computers as it legally can have. Heck, the aftermarket OBDII tachometer I installed has more computing power than the rest of the car combined.

Only other option I can think of that will be as offline will be retrofitting an older vehicle with Edison Motors’ d-e hybrid kit.

60s cars are actually repairable. Smallish ones, retrofit with a Duratec and transmission. Not electric obviously but a decent compromise.

I would do this if I could afford it. Probably 10k. I have the skills. Donor need to be a rear drive car. Eg small Ford pickup.

My daily driver is a 1960 Rambler American, with the tiny flathead six. With evaporative emissions and electronic carburetor.

for what it's worth, you can install a dummy load antenna to the cellular modem in most modern vehicles so it can't communicate. However anytime you take the car to a shop, likely all of the data is getting silently offloaded when the technician plugs into the OBD2 port with any dealer or authorized tools.

wow, this thread is looooong. Have you considered converting a car to electric? E-revolt is planning a 1-day conversion kit for VW Golfs (Golves?) but one-off conversions should cost about the same as a new electric car. I assume conversions won't come tied with to online crap. Plus, new car models are getting larger, which means they start looking more and more like mattress bases with a car on top... not a great look, in my opinion.

It looks like for Subarus one can disconnect the telematics module. bluetooth mic and/or front speakers will stop working but there are aftermarket fixes for that. Also pull fuse for Eyesight cameras. The event data recorder is part of the airbag module which saves info locally if airbags are deployed. Not an authority, my subaru is much older.

My understanding is a dealer / mechanic can disable the LTE antennae fairly easily / inexpensively for many cars. I'd look up forum posts for confirmation of experiences with a particular model; for instance, on most Subarus isn't a big deal and there are tutorials about DIY.

When we bought a used Honda Pilot a few years ago, the first thing I did was to find a copy of the service manuals so I could disconnect a bunch of stuff and make some wiring mods. All of the "secret" software access points are in the manuals as well, and there are many tweakable settings - probably a lot more in newer models. (no, I don't remember where I found the pdf manuals. 😀

We have two 2018 cars at our house because that's as recent as we could get something that wasn't entirely stealing our data. We still debated removing the sim card from the one car, but my mazda is real decent - physical controls for everything, carplay, and no tracking. Kind of amazing tbh. I'll be real upset when I have to upgrade in a decade.

Anyway, I suggest used cars, removing a sim, or maybe surrounding the head unit in foil or something as a faraday cage. It's such a dumpster fire.

When I ordered my latest one from GM (build to order, 2023 model year) I got a copy of the full feature matrix guide and there were options that would remove the connected components, but that might have only been for fleet and government purchase.

So it *IS* possible but may be a PITA to order.

in many jurisdictions automatic e-call crash reporting now requires a SIM anyway so there are no cars without connectivity anymore. Your best bet in modern cars are possibly European manufacturers because GDPR requires them to ask for consent for tracking, but even that is limited due to what the manufacturers are declaring as legitimate interest.

I dont think it is possible, at least not in europe.
As far as I know cars *must* have a sim card. The excuse is to be able to find you in case of emergency.
Where the data goes, how much data it produces, how long it is stored... remains a mistery to me.

The other problem is people... they dont care.

I asked my provider to shut the "spyware" down (which is not possible, because of legal requirements). Then I asked if I was the only customer asking for it. The answer was "Yes, indeed. Actually a couple of people came to have it turned on in old models where it was optional." That way they can see how many "drive-points" the app gives you and how long one drove and other statistics. The guy showed me then his app with all his trips in the last 3 years.

"Now I know where you live" - I said.
"Google knows, too. Who cares?" was the answer.

Others have already covered the “no such product exists in the market” answer, so I’ll just throw some wishful thinking into the Ethernet winds and suggest to the #infosec / hacker community that it seems we’ll collectively need to create the @frameworkcomputer of cars. There’s enough knowledge and money among a sufficiently large subset of us, especially if enough late career professionals decide they’d rather not entrust the detailed time-series geolocation of their family to a company which can’t avoid recapitulating the vulnerabilities of the 90s, and to the data brokers to which it sells that data, and to the advertisers and governments and criminal organizations buying from those data brokers.

Well, I had to go in to a dealership for my Chevy Bolt updates that happen over metal.
Running or not, without the OnStar internet button pushed, I can't sniff out any wireless signal (tested in 2G-only area, and closer to town/5G). If I don't plug into a public or commercial charger & just plug into my wall, and don't connect Android Auto, I'm convinced there's no connectivity.

I'd love for someone to point out something I missed.

I seem to recall from Mozillas attempt at documenting cars with predatory 'privacy policies' that Ford came out as not bad. The Ford Maverick is a simple and low-cost vehicle that afaik does not have a built-in transmitter unless you go for Blue Cruise etc.

Go find a used car from 2001-2005 with low mileage. Pay whatever it takes to make it reliable if it needs work.
Simplicity is golden. My 2001 Audi does not have a large LCD display in the center. It doesn’t try to pair with my phone. It has real switches not areas on a touchscreen. I can access diagnostics with a $50 tool and even reset the check engine light.
It’s even fun to drive.
And it didn’t cost $60k.

This is why I drive a 2014 Mazda 2. There are virtually no bells and whistles. There is a very minor security feature, and the computer is only there to run the fuel injectors. I do have tire pressure sensors, but they don't report anything until they are low. To the best of my knowledge I have no spyware.

I just got the Niro hybrid LX (base), and it VERY CLEARLY has no connectivity while having some modern tech. It doesn't even have SirusXM, you get HDRadio instead (that's... Supposed to be a downgrade? Sirius sucks and is too expensive!) so you don't even get the firmware downloads from that. It's also absolutely dead to the Kia app, so I'm fairly certain it has no on-board cellular modem otherwise they would use it to "remind you when service is due". It doesn't even have maps unless you plug in your phone. My key is even a key that I have to put into a keyhole and turn to start the car. To update the firmware, I have to put a flash drive physically into the USB slot.

The other trims have a different radio, and it definitely does have its own cellular modem and XM downlink. The Kia app lets them control the vehicle (so the cellular modem has access to the canbus, very cool super secure) and it has a push button start... That seems to have issues staying paired to the vehicle in 2025, so real key for the win.

just as an aside, the car itself might already be spyware on wheels, and on top it's apparently not uncommon that car dealers install GPS trackers on them on top of all of that.

From what I've heard from acquaintances in the trade, some lenders make this a condition of writing a loan.

In my case, I recently found a GPS tracker on a car I bought a few months ago from a well known nationwide chain of used car dealers. The wrinkle being, I didn't have financing on the car in the first place.

To their credit, the salesperson did mumble something about a tracker but mentioned that it wouldn't require one due to the lack of financing.

Can't easily tell if it's enabled or not, but the lights are on so I'm assuming it was phoning home. Kicking myself for not checking earlier...

nice! At the very least you've made me more aware I should upgrade the converted VW, to include solar panels, a modern fridge (not the absorption type, uses too much power) and perhaps 12V additional batteries. Great to both move away and survive long outaches 🤭 (and I keep the gas stove for cooking there) Might even consider upgrading to V2L. Or just plug in the chargers for phones etc. to the 12V outlets in the van.

This often overlooked but update your Router Firmware regularly. This will keep your network and your home devices more secure.

Also toss those TP-link devices. They are not secure and have massive security holes.

Das Problem ist, dass sogar Jugendliche dazu gezwungen werden. Bei Schiedsrichter wird darüber die Ausbildung gemacht und die Personalerfassung läuft unter Office365, weil nur Microsoft für Datenschutz bürgt. Sozialcoaching ist das nächste. Über die das Jobcenter Massnahmen finanziert, wo Teams der Goldstandard ist, Snapchat für Werbung und als Office gibt es nur 365. Die Erwachsenenbildung und Verbände solltest mal auf's Korn nehmen
