I really wasn't sure how to title this video. Like, if you image search what I'm eating, the most common result is "Mexican cup of fruit", but that didn't feel right. Also, I ordered it in Spanish from a man who only spoke Spanish? It feels weird to translate something that's so heavily based on a different language and culture, like, we don't translate "burrito" or "taco", right?
And so I've decided that I'm just gonna do my best to call all things by their original language as much as reasonably possible in my video titles. Feels less linguistically colonial-y? And also it's fun to learn new vocabulary!
Which apparently I did today. People liked my IKEA video, and it occurred to me that things I find mundane here in LA might seem interesting to someone literally anywhere else, so I passed this fruit cart, and my brain was all. Yeah! Content. Only I kinda called everything in the video wrong. In my daily life, I just walk up to the frutero and order fruta. I don't think about the name of the actual dish or what the actual stand might be called. "Frutería" means "fruit shop", and that kinda made sense for a brief second? Until I got home and rembered that the word for "fruit stand" totally exists. Doh.
