Has anyone successfully mirrored Wikipedia?

Feels like a good time to.
@queserasera just downloaded a bunch of wikis via kiwix, and the largest wikipediafile with english content is about 103Gig, wikipedia_en_all_maxi_2024-01.zim , but I am currently also testing to load wikipedia via torrent as explained on their site,

Does anyone have tips for working the first row of a brioche project after a two-color tubular/Italian cast-on? I haven't produced a rat's nest like this since my first attempt at #knitting 😂

Central Florida volunteers pack a million meals during MLK Day of Service event

About 4,000 volunteers gathered at the Orange County Convention Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to pack meals for those affected by the recent wildfires in California as well as for those in need across Central Florida.

MacKenzie and his colleagues have sent this quiet forest just outside Birmingham into the future – in a manner of speaking. They have pumped carbon dioxide (CO2) around the mature oak trees here in order to simulate the atmosphere that is expected to swathe planet Earth by the year 2050.

MacKenzie and his colleagues have been running their experiment for seven years to date, and the results have surprised them. Contrary to some previous analyses, their study suggests that trees can actually absorb more carbon as they age. It's a finding that highlights the immense importance of mature, temperate forests in terms of climate regulation.

What's more, for the first time, MacKenzie and his fellow forest-watchers have also shown that microscopic organisms living on these trees capture methane, another greenhouse gas harmful to the atmosphere. "[We] found the trees are providing another unexpected service for us," says MacKenzie. "The canopy hosts microbes, and these microbes eat the methane. There are lots of reasons to nurture forests.

The findings from Staffordshire indicate trees take up around 25 to 50 million tonnes of atmospheric methane each year, making them 7-12% better for climate than they are currently credited for.

❓❓❓ Knitting hive mind...

Pattern has balloon sleeves, but Mom wants less volume there. Design - Crème Anglaise - has slouchy sweatshirt feel. Did folded over collar of 1.5", body ribbing on tunic length torso of 2", both more than called for. Yoke style. Gauge 20 sts = 4".

How often to decrease? Still want to harmonize with other elements. Was thinking every 2" but that doesn't seem like enough. Advice?

I'm not sure if this is surprising or not. On the one hand, ChatGPT 3 once told me Poland was a landlocked country. On the other, I'd have thought they'd have gotten better than this by now, but I never use them for fact-checking because I'm not a crazy person.
The researchers shared sample historical questions with TechCrunch that LLMs got wrong. For example, GPT-4 Turbo was asked whether scale armor was present during a specific time period in ancient Egypt. The LLM said yes, but the technology only appeared in Egypt 1,500 years later.

Why are LLMs bad at answering technical historical questions, when they can be so good at answering very complicated questions about things like coding? Del Rio-Chanona told TechCrunch that it’s likely because LLMs tend to extrapolate from historical data that is very prominent, finding it difficult to retrieve more obscure historical knowledge.

For example, the researchers asked GPT-4 if ancient Egypt had a professional standing army during a specific historical period. While the correct answer is no, the LLM answered incorrectly that it did. This is likely because there is lots of public information about other ancient empires, like Persia, having standing armies.

Why are people still asking if LLM's are factual. LLM's are most definitely not working with facts. LLM's don't know about entities, they only know how to produce language expressions. They have no truth semantics, period.

Pay attention. In the next few days, it's almost certain Trump will deliberately say outrageous things. He'll do it to distract attention from his executive orders on things like birthright citizenship, healthcare, trans rights, etc. The story is what he's distracting from, not his fartlighting.

I'm surprised that so many on here seem to "take the bait" with the Musk Nazi salute thing.

I am no fan of Musk- he seems like someone who was more lucky and risk tolerant than smart.

But Musk himself denies that was the intent of the gesture- isn't that sufficient? Wouldn't it be so much worse if he said, "yes, I made this gesture because I believe in white supremacy!" No one is physically harmed by a gesture.

Attention is oxygen for the Musk/Trump fire.

Oligarch who owns a rocket company that's a major NASA contractor, and who's now unofficially in charge of US government spending, wants to spend more money on rockets to Mars. This surprises people..?

If anyone wants their own personal copy of Wikipedia on their computer, phone or tablet, a copy that cannot be deleted or edited by anyone else, there's an app called @kiwix that makes this possible:

https://kiwix.org

You can use the same app to install offline copies of lots of wiki-powered sites and many others too. I have a copy of WikiVoyage on my phone so wherever I go there's always some kind of info about it without needing an internet connection.

I'm not saying you should throw up copies of wikipedia that have had all the facts changed so that AI will scrape them and poison the training model because that would be bad.

There are many messages in the tech barons' presence at Trump's oath of office (god the hypocrisy), but one you should be clear on is that they are now partners with the regime.

They will sell you out in a heartbeat if it'll make the regime less inclined to hold them to account.

I’ve been involved in software development for awhile but I don’t code. So how am I involved in development? My skillsets:
  • QA

  • Project management
  • UI/UX testing
  • Product iteration
But I think my superpower is getting people to give a damn about what coders make. And like it or not, that’s what coders need.

CORRECTION: I code, but never in a professional context. I’ve made a few games, mostly just stuff to amuse me.

The reason I don’t code though is because there’s already a lot of coders out there, and I add nothing by contributing my own code beyond a fix here or there.

And also, coding demands you sit there and really focus on solving a problem, and then trying to figure out what went wrong after you thought you solved the problem.

Coders get deep in the weeds. So deep in the weeds it’s hard for them to get a bird’s eye view of their own work. You think you made something common sense, only to discover it’s not.

That’s why coders need people who are not in the weeds to help them out.
