Well because it's Caturday, I dug through my archives and found this picture from 2007. Meet Munchkin and CharlieCat... my last two and most deeply missed pets.

Munchkin was a rescue guinea pig... calm to the extreme and completely happy no matter where she was. She would toddle over to everyone and wait to be picked up... flattening out and napping whenever she was in anyones lap. Near the end of her life (i.e. in this picture), Munchkin would snuggle up to CharlieCat for warmth... and Charlie would gently put a paw on her and give her tongue baths.

One of the things I want to bring up is Bridgy App.

One of the plans I’m trying to make with getting people on BlueSky to turn on the Bridgy App has to do with the sudden-but-inevitable-betrayal moment.

One of the reasons people didn’t want to leave X was because they didn’t know people other places.

If they they give the gateway permissions, they will start knowing people other places before things go oh so very wrong.

They’ll already know where some of their friends are.

So that’s where they’ll look to go first.

@moira There will be no sudden-but-inevitable betrayal with Bluesky. There can't be. The tech is so open that the network could move on without the Bluesky PBC. Even if the company went rogue or disappeared overnight, the network would still be possible to run without them.

That's the difference between atproto and ActivityPub. You lose everything if your instances goes belly-up overnight. You lose nothing on atproto.

They're promising it, but unless I'm very out of date, they have not yet delivered it.

I'm aware it is theoretically possible to do this. But there are leagues between "theory" and "reality," and last I heard, they still don't even have a real plan for actually _implementing_ portable identity.

(eta: To be clear, if they actually manage to pull it off: great! _I'm for it_. But they haven't _yet_, and there exist what historically have been very strong pressures _not_ to actually follow through. I'd love to see those pressures fail this time.)

@MikeBeas I'm unaware of any other... what do they call them, collector nodes? The stream collectors through which everything must pass. I mean, _I have seen people running BlueSky instances talking about this_, and they were saying that they don't exist yet, that everything has to go through central.

I mean, it's possible they're _also_ out of date, but I'd think people actually running their own instances would be caught up on this stuff.

Mastodon is great, but to make it even better for professional use it might help if something like the "top-links" in the "catch-up" (Beta) window of #phanpy (https://phanpy.social/ ) is the home page by default for all users. These top-links are sorted by the number of times boosted by the ones *you follow*. This could be useful for #science, to highlight most important developments (e.g. publications) in your network. Now you easily miss them, causing some colleagues to leave.

AFAIK it was. Then the Mastodon Homeowners Association dogpiled @snarfed.org until he made it opt-in. What I'd like to see him do is make the opt-in itself opt-in. So it's up to server admins to decide whether they want BS interop with their server to be opt-in or opt-out.

I suspect our server's community would prefer opt-out.

Having said that, there's some benefits to people effectively having to choose either;

* actually decentralised social networks like the fediverse (or Nostr)

OR

* pseudo-decentralised social platforms like BS (or Meta's Chains)

It spares us having to deal with "influencer" types who think volume of noise is more important than quality of signal.

@strypey just to throw a different light on influencers as someone who works in social media - the reason quantity over quality is important on other platforms is because of the algorithms on them. A lot of them would prefer to post less but they can't because it's their livelihood and posting less would see them punished.

Sure there's some who don't care and want to post nonsense, but there are great influencers who are pushed to in order to be successful.

That explains how the habit develops. But not why people pick replacements that supply the habit, rather than liberating them from it.

While I'm glad you shared this, your reply is somewhat out of context. I was referring more to some people choosing a Xitter replacement on the basis of total population to be reached (quantity), over the values encoded in the tech (quality).

@strypey I have the same frustration but when your business model depends on reaching the most people, the decision is made for you based on where the most people are.

I also know some people have tried Fedi and had bad experiences here because they didn't understand the cultural norms here and instead of gently explaining, people just yelled and called them awful, so they left for less aggressive pastures.

That logic makes sense in a broadcast world, where channels have fairly consistent audiences. But it totally breaks down in social media.

FarceBook still has a higher total population than anywhere. But there's no guarantee anyone will see your stuff there - even if they follow you - unless you pay to play.

I first got active on the fediverse on Quitter.se. They ran a GNU social server, which could automatically crosspost to a Titter account. I set one up for that purpose.

Every now and then I'd login to respond to any comments that merited a reply, and compare the level of engagement with what I was getting in the verse. Despite the total population of Titter being massively higher, both the quantity and quality of engagement here was consistently higher.

I must admit that my failure to reach "non-nerdy people" in the fediverse has been discouraging. The arrival of climate and biodiv scientists + communicators on bsky is massive.

I will "stick around" here, but I found, after a short trial that bridging is not good enough for me, because I can't see how to have two-way follow-up exchanges across that bridge.

So I have resolved to use buffer for posting in parallel on both sides, and then deal with the engagement where it comes.

I beg to differ. I recently got my first paid subscription from a shameless self-promotion here. I regularly see people posting jobs wanted and jobs offered ads. As well as begposts along the lines of 'can't pay my rent this week, please drop cash money in this digital bucket'.

Will an amazing BlueSky following get you paid in similar ways? Probably. But it has nothing to do with the relative size of their total population.

Like the bacteria, this style of "influencer" floods the zone with shit simply by existing. If BlueSky keeps them away from the fediverse for a bit longer, that's the best argument I've seen so far for BS existing ; )

The experience you have will vary depending on which accounts your server has noticed.

I did join in last year and (from what my server could see) it was mostly people talking about positive everyday things, it was very fun and constructive.

Obviously you had a different experience, but the Join In tag isn't specifically intended for tales of woe.

A way to avoid this variation is to follow the group rather than hashtag, as the group will be identical on any server.

People deal with loneliness in different ways, I don't think it's useful to vilify any particular approach. Join In is meant to be as inclusive as possible.

I'm sure you didn't mean it like this, but some people might interpret phrases like "we all have shit do deal with" and "pity partying" as shaming them into keeping quiet.

(Again, I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, I'm just saying it may sound like shaming, especially if someone is having a tough time.)

Out for today’s visit to my friend #IndustrialEstateCat to drop off a meal and exchange her microwaveable heat pad. She’s just enjoying some turkey and a sachet of chicken-flavoured yoghurt. The heat pad means she’ll be warm and comfortable in her Mr Snugs Kat Den, as there’s a nasty cold wind blowing. Since the weather got colder she’s living almost full time in the den. 😊
