Sonic 3 is a good, fun movie*. I genuinely believe that the more weird lore shit they embrace, the more fun and the less generic superhero-y it comes out.

Also, there's so many great easter eggs, but it never goes full Ready Player One by making those references plot-critical — they're there to make fans laugh, and that's about it.

(*with the caveat that Jim Carrey is still a terrible human being who arguably is complicit in the deaths of hundreds of thousands)

@ghpancardo Totally with you on that. I did like that in Sonic 3, he seems to be given a lot tighter direction and a lot less room to just play himself. A couple of the best one-liners in the movie, imho, were Eggman moments... given what a hack Carrey is, that's one hell of an accomplishment in direction.

The human characters added in the first Sonic movie are, thankfully, given much less screen time and plot focus. They're still there, but in ways that aren't as grating as before. Both Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves completely sell Knuckles and Shadow, respectively.

The fight choreography is really amazing, as expected, and gets a lot of mileage out of just how *weird* Sonic and Shadow are as characters.

@SnoopJ It's definitely a lot more fun than your average action movie, I think, as long as you're willing to just let it be its own weird thing. The lore may not be that complex (at least, outside of the Archie comics), but it is strange. The first Sonic movie tried to flatten that out and turn Sonic into a Marvel character, but they seem to have learned their lesson on that.

@SnoopJ But like the thing I think I've always loved about the games is that they're emotionally earnest and genuine even when the stuff happening on screen is goofy and ridiculous as all shit. They take themselves seriously at an emotional level, and at precisely zero other levels.

I think the newest movie has finally started to hone in on that strength. Like nothing about the plot makes any damn sense, and in all the best ways, but it feels genuine anyway.

yea, it took me a long time to round the corner from "Sonic is cringe" into "Sonic is cringe and that rocks" and I think you hit the nail on the head: the emotional tones are the consistent thing that everything else in the "narrative" portion of that universe orbits around

(although I guess you can argue that even the original game has emotional overtones if you ponder what's going on, Sonic's motivations for doing what he's doing, blah blah, but maybe that's hindsight)

@SnoopJ I may have to steal "Sonic is cringe and that rocks," it's a perfect summary, really. Anyway, I do think that even from the first Genesis games (and absolutely Sonic CD), they tried to have some kind of emotional storytelling. Sky Sanctuary Zone from S3&K is a really cool early experiment in video game narratives, I'd argue.

It's never tried to be coherent as a plot, but as you say, the *vibes* are always there and matter.

Today I visited a tiny public library in the main local authority building of a city in the East Midlands, England. I haven't rearranged any of the books, nor are these shelves specifically devoted to equality and diversity; it's just the non-fiction section.

If you have any friends in Florida or any of those other book-purging states, maybe show them this post. A library isn't supposed to contain only what you know (or think you know) already. It's supposed to challenge, enlighten and inspire.

Yes, of course. But the section was simply labelled "non-fiction" - and it is a very small library. Regardless of Dewey's system it is always a choice which books to stock and display, so all things considered this is an impressive commitment to representing marginalized groups.

Enjoyed reading about the Parker Solar Probe as it prepares to skim the sun’s atmosphere - at a respectable (for humans) fraction of the speed of light - on Christmas Eve. Surviving that requires some amazing materials science!

Text Shot: The science instruments had to be hardened as well. As the probe flies into the Sun there's an instrument known as a Faraday cup that hangs out to measure ion and electron fluxes from the solar wind. Unique technologies were needed. The cup itself is made from sheets of Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum, with a melting point of about 4,260° Fahrenheit (2,349° C). Another challenge came from the electronic wiring, as normal cables would melt. So, the team at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and NASA grew sapphire crystal tubes to suspend the wiring and made the wires from niobium.

It might actually make it collect more power throughout the day and seasons to charge the batteries.

Plus, remember that efficiency is not what matters in a use case like that. It just has to collect enough energy to charge the batteries enough to power the light when it should be lit.

Anyways, we're in early stages and the best designs will prove themselves out is my opinion.
