TIL that the author of "Goodnight Moon" died following a routine operation at age 42, and did not live to see the success of her book. She bequeathed the royalties to Albert Clarke, the nine-year-old son of her neighbor, who squandered the millions the book earned him.

The media did try to push the "Democrats in disarray" narrative exactly like I expected them to, but it failed spectacularly because so many Democrats galvanized behind Kamala so quickly.

We dodged a bullet. If not for that, things would look like 1968 right now (similar chaos resulted in Nixon getting elected).

I don't think that these pro-Trump desperate attempts to avoid democratic policies by Elon qualify as his most bananas though. Some of those Nazi tweets should have been worse for his companies' fates imo.

In the end what good is innovation if ot doesn't help people or the planet? The billionaires that put on fronts that they help solve climate change are trying to cover their asses of them responsible for the earths decay, their industries continue to thrive while greenwashing the problems they cause and place the responsibility on us when they own the means of production which isn't sustainable. Wealth doesn't mean shit if the planet dies, if it dies we won't be here.
Escarpment mastodon (AP)
To a moral non-objectivist / skeptic, innovation is neither good nor bad. It is just something that happens. For example, many would view the innovation of nuclear weapons as pretty bad. Less controversial cases of innovation are still murky, with subjectively "good" and "bad" elements of the innovation.
Never once did I say innovation was a good or bad thing, throughout history societal developed and used innovation to make their lives more efficient. The power of innovation itself isn't a problem, it's how it's used and who is using it. Capitalism is a system that uses innovation for profit not for societal development, it utilizes earth resources in an exploitative way for profit, not for innovation. The motive for Capitalism innovation is profit.
Escarpment mastodon (AP)
To the moral subjectivist, how it's used and who is using it is neither good nor bad, objectively speaking. The objective truth is that people use innovation in a variety of ways.
Escarpment mastodon (AP)
Maximizing profit is neither morally good nor morally bad, at least under this one philosophical school of thought which I am partial to.
When you maximize profit you're doing it at the expense of other and the environment. In the case of Capitalist they don't mind exploiting workers for profit and discarding them and neither do they care about exploiting the environment for its finite resources. So when you maximize profit for yourself it comes at a cost of others. It would be exploitative. And I would argue money has no real value but it's a oppressive tool used by Capitalism to hold monopoly over the proletariat.
Escarpment mastodon (AP)
See, right there you have landed on the subjective nature. The exploitee disapproves of the arrangement and the exploiter approves.

When you stub your toe, it doesn't hurt me- your pain is subjectively bad for only you.

The exploiter approves of the arrangement and has succeeded in making the world align with their preferences. The exploitee disapproves and has failed to make the world align with their preferences.

4 hottest days ever observed raise fears of a planet nearing ‘tipping points’
Chuck mastodon (AP)
Well according to what folks felt in 2018 we are in fact, *beyond* the tipping point. With that in mind, you have to understand and prepare for things to get really really not great in your lifetime, maybe as soon as within the next decade.

The challenge with statistical models is that they are built on what we know, so cannot effectively predict the results of what we don't know. (same reason that an LLM can't write cogently about something it hasn't been trained on).
AI6YR Ben mastodon (AP)
@ChuckMcManis "decade" (laughs to self)
Chuck mastodon (AP)
My guess is that it's going to get really real for people when sea level jumps 10m (~32'). That's the building code in Florida for building to avoid storm surges and king tides. When the base level of the ocean is there, storm surges and king tides will be another 32' higher than *that*.

A lot of property will become worthless and of course the keys will cease to be a place.
AI6YR Ben mastodon (AP)
@ChuckMcManis Ah, innocent child, people are going to starve to death before sea level rise is an issue, from disruption of agriculture.
Chuck mastodon (AP)
Would be interested in how you reason to that conclusion. Not disagreeing just saying that people starve now and for much of the world it goes unremarked.
AI6YR Ben mastodon (AP)
@ChuckMcManis LOL edit: people start starving in the first world.
AI6YR Ben mastodon (AP)
@ChuckMcManis Point made. Maybe a massive power outage and thousands dead from heat stroke? I dunno, some of us are not good at caring about anyone but ourselves, no matter the circumstances.
Chuck mastodon (AP)
I am cynical enough to think that it only becomes "mainstream" news when the rich and powerful start to actually suffer (which they will when their beach front property becomes worthless and/or their rental units get flooded). Poor people dying from the effects of climate change? That is somehow always "their" problem and not "our" problem. It only becomes "real" (again in my opinion) when it discomforts the 1%ers.
Steve's Place mastodon (AP)

Live coverage: SpaceX prepares for first of back-to-back Sunday morning Falcon 9 launches

[summary]The overnight launch marks the second Falcon 9 flight since the July 11
mishap that grounded the rocket. Liftoff is targeting 1:09 a.m. EDT (0509

Update: SpaceX adjusted the T-0 liftoff time of the mission.

SpaceX aims to continue its post-mishap resurgence with back-to-back launches in the early morning hours of Sunday. It staged two of its Falcon 9 rockets to launch from its pads in both Florida and California.

First up is the Starlink 10-4 mission, which will add a batch of 23 Starlink Version 2 Mini satellites to its growing mega-constellation. Liftoff is targeting 1:09 a.m. EDT (0509 UTC).

Spaceflight Now will have live coverage beginning about an hour prior to liftoff.

The mission comes on the heels of a successful return to flight operation for SpaceX early Saturday morning. It was the first Falcon 9 launch in just over two weeks, following a second stage mishap that occurred during a Starlink mission, which launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base on July 11.

The Falcon 9 booster supporting this mission, tail number B1077 in the SpaceX fleet, will be launching for a 14th time. It previously launched NASA’s Crew-5 mission to the International Space Station, the GPS 3 Space Vehicle 06 satellite and two cargo missions to the orbiting outpost among its previous flights.

A little more than eight minutes after liftoff, the booster will land on the SpaceX droneship, ‘A Shortfall of Gravitas.’ If successful, it will mark the 77th landing on ASOG and the 331st booster landing to date.

The Starlink 10-4 mission will be the 51st dedicated Starlink launch of 2024 and the 114th dedicated launch of the V2 Mini variety of Starlink satellites.

According to expert orbital tracker and astrophysicist, Jonathan McDowell, there are more than 6,100 active Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit. On Wednesday, SpaceX announced that with a recent deal from the airline, WestJet, Starlink internet service is now available on more than 1,000 aircraft.

A photo of my cat Chapati making a suspicious sniffy face up at the coffee table. He’s a black-and-gray tabby on the heavy side. Green eyes, slightly squinted to help him see through the table. @msbellows That doesn't mean he's not an ableist. His covid failures affect many disabled people & they're struggling for help. He has ignored them, is an antimasker & got covid 3 times & still doesn't take masking seriously enough. Several politicians here, in BC(and in several other provinces), across Canada, also supported past pro disability bills & pushes to change policies that affect disabled folks. They all failed to actually help disabled people, once they got into higher positions of public office & had more powers. In fact, almost all of them voted against increasing benefits & medical supports for people with disabilities.

This is a black and white photograph featuring three individuals on what appears to be a dirt road. The person in the center, likely an adult male, is walking towards the camera carrying a suitcase. He has dark hair and is wearing a light-colored shirt and dark pants. To his left, there is a woman dressed in a long dress with a pattern at the bottom, a belted waist, and a full skirt that reaches her calves. She appears to be holding a young child in her arms who is also wearing a light-colored top. On the right side of the image, another adult male can be seen walking away from the camera. He is wearing a wide-brimmed hat and dark clothing. There are power lines visible in the background against a clear sky. The setting suggests a rural or semi-rural environment, possibly during a time when traveling by car was less common. There's no text present on the image to provide additional context.
