Sigh... I remember, as a pre-teen, getting a multi-band transistor radio and how "short-wave" was an eye-opener, a direct line into information "outside the box" of the normal communication and 3-network TV, plus AM radio news of the world.

Went through a lot of the fun mentioned here, like QSL cards (be it 'short-wave', CB or 'ham').
And for nearly as long as I can remember, the FCC partnered with big $ whittled away at public airwaves (spectrum) and also the regulated / allocated frequencies, trading in things like amateur radio for remote garage doors and for-profit radio.

And 🦖 then there was this thing called "Fairness Doctrine".... Ah well, it's off to TikTok we go... (HT Kamala)

When Emerald Ash Borers killed most of the ash trees in Ohio, the Toledo Zoo repurposed the wood* as picnic tables, leaving the edge with the "serpentine tunnels" as the unfinished edge of the boards. The effect was really beautiful once they'd been stained. * as it couldn't be sold or removed from the site.
