French botanist and explorer Jeanne Barret was born #OTD in 1740.

She is best known for being the first woman to circumnavigate the globe with Bougainville's expedition on the Boudeuse and Étoile from 1766 to 1769. Disguised as a man, under the name Jean Barret, she enlisted as a valet and assistant to the expedition's naturalist, Philibert Commerson, shortly before the expedition's ships weighed anchor. According to Bougainville, she was an expert in botany.

The file creation speed is very significant - going from 407 MB/s on proxmox to 1467 MB/s on freebsd.

Do you know why there is such a large difference?

@moozer Considering that the Proxmox host on ZFS goes at 968.64 MB/s and FreeBSD host on ZFS flies at 1625.67 MB/s, I'd dare to say that ZFS seems to be much more optimized on FreeBSD than on the Proxmox PVE Kernel.

ZFS on Linux still not mature yet, and FreeBSD support ZFS out of the box, to the kernel level.

If ZFS had close integration with the Linux kernel, it would have much or less similar I/O performance, both are POSIX complaint systems after all.

I've recently moved some of my VMs from KVM to bhyve and have noticed a significant performance improvement.
Most noticeably with Nextcloud (Debian guest) where it feels really quick and snappy now where it felt clunky before. I guess this may be due to improved IO performance similar to what you have tested.

@paul Exactly the reason why I decided to perform those tests. Moving VMs to bhyve led people to think I've upgraded the hardware as they're "quicker". Glad to know you're having the same experience!

to be fair it's probably ZFS doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, but @stefano 's testing has shown that even on ZFS on proxmox (KVM) the performance still isn't quite as good as ZFS on FreeBSD (bhyve) - which is likely due to the ZFS modules in FreeBSD being native over additional kernel modules in proxmox (or any other Linux distro that can use it)

bhyve is definitely worth looking into if you use VMs though, for sure!

@paul @ben I don’t know, I could equally imagine the Qemu I/O paths not being ideal. Qemu is a beast of a code base, which even after years of effort hasn’t managed to get close to eliminating the big Qemu lock (BQL) for example; bhyve is tiny in comparison.

Rule of thumb: if ZFS consistently beats ext4 in a basic filesystem benchmark on Linux, there's either something wrong with your setup or your benchmark is flawed.

I'd switch from sysbench to fio for I/O related tests.

The results are interesting - I wouldnt have expected such a wide margin in some of the results.

That said, Ive never used Proxmox and it has been a while since I’ve used KVM at all (and at the time I was using Fedora/Centos on XFS - ext4 has eaten enough data for me to never ever want to use it again)

This is excelent, thanks for sharing it. One other test that might be interesting would be to overprovision a bunch of VMs and see how it handles scheduling when resources are scarce. Of course it's easy for me to think tasks up when it's not my time.

Mind you, I have been going out every morning to lecture the juvenile red-tailed hawk screaming in my trees to shut up and eat the rats that are eating my tomatoes. The outpouring of support and excitement for Harris has been incredible. Soon the honeymoon will be over and it's going to get rough. So let's be ready for that.

But importantly I think the last week was an excellent lesson in narrative setting. For the first time in a long time, we set the stories, and the GOP was left playing defense.

We have always had that power. And the power resides in liberal citizens, not the Democratic party or the MSM. For once we stopped outrage posting about whatever narrative the GOP chose for the week, and set our own story.

Push back on misinformation where it matters. But it's also important to ignore the outrage farming and stop elevating the nonsense they throw out to distract us and keep us off balance.

“Fun” interaction where someone confidently stated COVID doesn’t affect the brain in response to a comment about it, and when we mentioned there is evidence to the contrary, they immediately shut down with “I don’t want to know because I can’t do anything about it”, as their life circumstances (school age children, their particular job, etc) make it hard to take precautions. All this is to say that it sucks we’ve forced people into positions of willing ignorance just to cope with helplessness

As of 5pm last night, it was indeed a massive heat related disaster on the I-15 and I-40. San Bernardino County Fire Update:

"We are actively addressing the needs of motorists stuck without water and experiencing other issues. We strongly recommend that all individuals attempting to travel northbound divert and seek alternate routes...

Numerous calls for service have been received by our dispatch center from both Interstate 40 and the 15 Freeway. These include individuals exhibiting medical conditions and heat-related emergencies. In response, County Fire has brought additional ambulances and paramedic fire apparatus to the area to address these calls."

5 PM Update: Baker Incident
⚠️Northbound Closure: Northbound 15 continues to be closed with a hard closure at Afton Canyon. This is expected to be extended due to ongoing operations.
⚠️Southbound Status: The southbound 15 is currently open; however, there are periodic short closures to bring in heavy equipment and additional apparatus. CHP is coordinating these intermittent closures while emergency equipment is escorted on the opposing southbound lanes.
The San Bernardino County Fire Logistics Division has brought supplies to the Clyde V Kane Rest Stop off the northbound 15, south of Afton Canyon Road. Water has been provided at this location for motorists who are stuck without water and experiencing other issues due to heat and vehicle mechanical problems.
We are actively addressing the needs of motorists stuck without water and experiencing other issues. We strongly recommend that all individuals attempting to travel northbound divert and seek alternate routes as the closure is expected to be extended due to the hazmat and suppression operations related to the truck fire.
