Saying The Quiet Part Out Loud (Part Infinity) https://mockpaperscissors.com/2024/07/27/saying-the-quiet-part-out-loud-part-infinity/

Trump, in 2016, standing in front of a podium on top of a red carpet with the Presidential Seal of the United States giving what looks like a Nazi salute.
“A Strong Man for Troubled Times”

78-year-old, 34-count convicted felon and adjudicated rapist Donald Trump was rallying some White Christian Nationalists (at Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA, so I think the description fits) to vote for him, and let it slip out:
The former president urged attendees at the faith-themed event to vote — “Vote early. Vote absentee. Vote on Election Day. I don’t care how, but you have to get out and vote,” he said — and promised that in four years, “we’ll have it fixed so good you’re not going to have to vote.”

This is not his first rodeo. He’s said this a few times now, and never explains it, and more alarmingly, the press moves on and doesn’t ask about it. Here it is in context:

Trump: You have to get out and vote. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four years, it will be fixed, it will be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore.. In four years, you won’t have to vote again. pic.twitter.com/DBGcBr3Wht

The modern Olympics started in 1896, founded by Pierre de Coubertin, a French aristocrat. He had conflicting motives. On one hand, his idea for a global sports competition stemmed from anxieties about French masculinity following a war defeat. He saw sports as a way to masculinize French men.

#AI #GenerativeAI #Automation #AIArt #VideoGames: "In other words: Even now, a year and a half into the AI boom, it’s *still* unclear whether a) this will be a truly transformative and disruptive force, at least in the eyes of employers and executives, b) it will stick around, propped up by reams of venture capital for years making a middling kind of impact in different sectors, a destabilizing but not totally destructive force for workers, or c) collapse in a spectacular bursting bubble, and going the way of the metaverse or web3.

But underlying all this, and the root cause for much of the most vociferous despair and outrage, I think, is the uniquely depressing fact that we are having some of these conversations in the first place, at all. The pitch of automation has historically been that it will do the dangerous, dirty, and dull jobs so that we humans can focus on the stuff that allows for human flourishing. So why are we here, watching concept artists lose their jobs to software trained on previous artists’ work, auto-generating output at the press of a button? Why are we automating the job of translators, who have a unique knowledge of their local language and culture, and can artfully translate works into a new medium with its meaning intact? Why do we want to live in a world where instead of an actual voice actor we have AI voice actors synthesized into a mush from all those who came before them?"

Silhouette of a cat watching a zoom call
Muffin attends Childless Cat Ladies for Harris call.

Hey guys, remember the Pandemic and how everyone ended up working and playing on Zoom (looking at you, Toobin!), and then there was the Zoom backlash and everyone hated it? “Coulda been an email, ‘Grain!”

We’re back to loving it, according to this morning’s email thingie from Axios:
Gatherings of tens of thousands of Vice President Harris’ supporters are raising millions of dollars for her campaign — and it’s happening on Zoom.
  • Why it matters: It’s a new era of virtual rallies. These online events are cheaper to organize, easier to attend, and will be powerful tools for fundraising and voter outreach this fall, Axios’ Jacob Knutson writes.
🔎 Zoom in: On Thursday night, a “White Women: Answer the Call” Zoom event organized by activist Shannon Watts was attended by 200,000 participants and raised over $8.5 million, according to organizers.

Honestly, I cannot imagine how any resource-intense video application could possibly host 200,000 participants at the same time, let alone take secure donations from the same platform. Zoom has clearly upped their game from the glitchy video conferences I recall.
👀 What’s next: The virtual blitz continues. Harris is set to give a virtual address at a Gen Z summit hosted by Voters of Tomorrow this afternoon.
  • The group White Dudes for Harris will hold a Zoom call Monday night.

If you have not already donated to the campaign and feel so inclined, you can join one of these calls and do it then. You don’t have to be a White Dude or Gen Z to participate; I participated in the Win with Black Men call, and no one noticed.

Also from Axios:
In the days since Vice President Kamala Harris launched her presidential bid, more than 170,000 volunteers have joined her cause, her campaign says.

The momentum is there.

The Internet is buzzing with reports of Mars rover Perseverance finding possible signs of ancient microbial life.

Analysis of the rock named “Cheyava Falls” by Perseverance's instruments indicate chemical signatures and structures that could have been formed by microbial life billions of years ago when the area had running water. But non-biological origins cannot be ruled out.

Only bringing the rock back to earth will provide definitive answers.

Astrobiologists use a seven-step scale, called the CoLD (Confidence of Life Detection) scale, to research whether a sample could indicate life.

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover took this selfie on July 23, 2024, the 1,218th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. To the left of the rover near the center of the image is the arrowhead-shaped rock nicknamed “Cheyava Falls,” which has features that may bear on the question of whether Mars was home to microscopic life in the distant past. The small dark hole in the rock is where Perseverance took a core sample, which is now in a sample tube stored in the rover’s belly. The white patch to the right of the hole is where the rover used an abrasion tool to clear away the top surface, allowing science instruments to study the rock’s composition.

@dansup is uploading a photo to pixelfed a 2-step process like it is on mastodon? I'm trying to get IFTTT webhooks to work using this guide

@dansup
We implement the same Mastodon APIs, however | will work on a single endpoint you will be able to use with IFTTT

that would be amazing if possible, its the only thing that keeps me from using pixelfed, as I mentioned I struggle to upload images because of a health issue, and if I could automate that part, pixelfed would be my home.

Squatter gets 40 years for illegally taking over Panama City Beach condo in Florida

Olandis Hobbs, 37 was sentenced on Tuesday after being found guilty earlier this month of using false documents to take ownership of an approximately $700,000 condo in the Panama City Beach area, according to the State Attorney's Office of the 14th Judicial Circuit.

"I hope this sends a strong message," State Attorney Larry Basford said in a release. "Do not come to Northwest Florida and try to steal people's identifications and/or property by squatting because we will not tolerate this."

The property is legally owned by an 85-year-old woman and her children.

Hobbs has committed similar acts in other places, like New York, and he was sued but never arrested.

"This might be your first significant conviction, but it is a doozy," Judge Dustin Stephenson said, according to the release. "You stole rest from the sunset of someone's life and should be punished for it."

Kamala Uses Trump’s Favorite Photo Against Him in First Campaign Ad

Soundtracked to Beyoncé’s 2016 song “Freedom,” the campaign ad alternates between footage of Harris, her supporters, and B-roll footage, over which the vice president and 2024 candidate says, “In this election we each face a question: What kind of country do we want to live in?”

Cutting to footage of Trump and J.D. Vance, Harris’s voiceover continues, “There are some people who think we should be a country of chaos, of fear, of hate. But us, we choose something different. We choose freedom.”

It also mentions choosing “a future where … no one is above the law,” at which point the video cuts to Trump’s 2023 Fulton County Jail mug shot—an image the Trump campaign itself has used on its website and merchandise—as well as a flurry of news headlines, timed to the soundtrack’s percussion, about his recent 34 felony convictions.

The video emphasizes a number of other issues one can expect to be key points of Harris’s campaign, including reproductive freedom, gun violence, childhood poverty, and affordable health care.

The ad closes with Harris saying, “We believe in the promise of America, and we’re ready to fight for it. Because when we fight we win.”
