@The_Caretaker My grandfather told me the story about how the signage for the German-American Club was changed to the American Club. But you could always read the word German several decades later if you looked closely. The Irish side of my ancestors were discriminated against and then the German side had to be very low key, during WW2.

Please read up on whether your messaging system is *end-to-end* encrypted, not just “encrypted”, and think about whether you trust the developers to write good code and not lie to you about how things work.

Mastodon DMs are *not* end-to-end encrypted! You should not write anything on Mastodon that you don’t want published in the open (given sufficient incentive).

Some systems *can* be end-to-end encrypted but are not by default. RCS, FB Messenger, and Instagram DMs fall into this category AFAICT. Some systems don’t even offer it, like Discord.

Please consider moving your private messages to a system that is private by design! I’m partial to Signal, but feel free to choose your own.

(you know this but for people reading it)

As noted in https://support.apple.com/en-us/102651, iMessage is effectively end to end encrypted if you enable “advanced data protection” in iCloud settings. Otherwise while the messages themselves are, the backups of those messages aren’t.

The only reason I’m aware of not to do this is that you can’t recover your data (eg by calling support) if you lose access to it.

I'm trying experiments in photogrammetry, where you take a zillion overlapping pictures and spend three weeks with a fancy graphics card trying to get the hacked experimental drivers to run the fancy meshing algorithms working without wrecking the standard OS video drivers and then you give up and send it all to a cloud service and an hour later they send you a solid object model that you can then modify in a CAD program.
Here you can see the radiator and fans, front left tire, air cleaner, and some of the fast idle and coasting dashpots on the carb. From above, the scan is good enough to see the Datsun logo on the valve cover, and the clearance between the engine and radiator and the distributor/engine clearance on the other side of the engine are pretty good. The area around the carb is messy IRL so I'm not surprised it's messy here. Just no way to get a camera into all the crannies.

I was looking at self-contained handhelds when I fell into that one. Since it works through the phone, just screenshot whatever you want to keep for reference. A handheld with a smaller screen and the ability to save to an SD card was over 4x the cost.
