I had an interesting thing happen #
today, and an associated lady brag, but it requires a bit of backstory:
Last week I reached out to a potential candidate and asked if they’d like to interview for a role I had open. They agreed and booked an interview, then got on the call and immediately let me know that they weren’t interested in the job, but they would be happy to introduce me to other people they knew for a placement fee.
I said thanks no thanks because that’s not how this client operates, and was honestly a little miffed that they took an interview slot from a candidate who was genuinely looking for a job.
Figured that was the end of it, until they booked additional time on my calendar today and asked if they could “pick my brain” about starting their own staffing agency.
NOW… normally I am very happy to offer advice to folks who are trying to start their own businesses, but the back door way this person tried to do it really gave me the ick.
Instead of just telling them to F off, I responded that I would be happy to jump on a call at my consulting rate, figuring that would make them disappear.
Instead, they said they would be interested in booking at the rate quoted them to get more information about starting a business like the one I have.
So… TL;DR I might be a business consultant now?
But let us not overlook the audacity, the gall, and the gumption of assuming they could book my time for free. I’m quite proud of myself for asking for what my time is worth
