Do young people today not know what "sign your name" means? I get that cheques and handwritten receipts and credit card slips aren't really a thing anymore, but contracts and bank forms and lots more still are. Do they not get taught this at all?
I wonder if all that will dissappear. Maybe AI can be used to forge signatures? I've never thought of that before, but now I'm worried 😑 It'll probably be online soon anyways, like get a mortgage using an app! heck, we won't have a mortgage industry anymore once #ClimateChange really gets going. I'm sure nobody thought the home insurance industry would ever dissappear...
Jackass leans on the counter at my desk, leans in, gets four sentences in in my personal space before he gets around to, "because I'm not well." Thanks, fucker. Glad I'm wearing my mask. Wish you were, too.

I am wondering when...
- First Jan VI person to get in a shootout with police - First to kill their wife/girlfriend in revenge - First attempt on judge/FBI agent inv. in conviction - First to assassinate a Dem poliician - First to assassinate a Repub (for not cooperating) - First elected to local office - First elected to nat office - First mass shooting by one released
(I suspect only a matter of time, unfortunately--may I be proven wrong 🙁
Deport the bishop where, exactly, Mr. Collins? You mean "put in a camp" or similar. This euphemistic use of "deport" for "detain/imprision" needs to be called out more, I think.
You know how some films, particularly old sci-fi films, are terrible but still quite enjoyable? Killdozer is free to watch on YouTube. There are ads but they're tolerable
Reminded yet again how I'm pissed at people surrendering and calling it victory...
A reminder: if you're part of the "Block Bluesky/Threads By Default" crowd, you're just handing over victory.
Enshittifying the fediverse because you're afraid of big corpos and think everyone who isn't already here can just die in the hellhole fire of the other networks, "How [em]DARE[/em] People Suggest We Build Fire Exits!".
So yeah, screw that self absorbed bullshit.
People are [em]leaving[/em] the fediverse for Bluesky, why? Because people over here demand purity to random ideals, because people over here think it's unreasonable that someone might want to connect with friends and loved ones who made a different choice of network.
This is part of a much bigger problem... pissed that I'm surrounded all my life by people who think holier than though infighting and rejecting anyone who isn't pure enough in their ideals, instead of y'know actually pushing for changes that protect people.
I'm staring down the barrel of a gun in my life as my country falls apart to fascism and I'm in the top two of most hated and most at risk minorities... but at least y'all kept people on Bluesky from realizing the fediverse even exists...
Oh sure, the cat can sleep 12 hours a day and beg for food and pets, and they're adorable, but when I do it, I'm being weird and I need to get therapy.
It's believed the body of pilot Michael Martin is inside the plane but that won't be confirmed until a recovery team can navigate the steep, rugged terrain. Discovery of the wreck of the Cherokee Six will likely amplify the various conspiracy theories and plot twist scenarios floated since Martin, a Las Vegas executive, took off from North Las Vegas Airport on the morning of Jan. 2 without telling anyone even though his work calendar was full for the rest of the day.

*extremely* reminiscent of what's happened with Huy Fong switching their sriracha from jalapeños exclusively grown on the Underwood ranch to whatever futures they could source on the open market in Mexico after the son of the founder took over.
Catholic Bishops (Papas: Pius XI & Pius XII) were complicit. Trump is a Nazis as are all GOP especially the Christo Fascists and their phoney churches living in luxurious mansions.
Headed out to the migrant aid camp at the end of the border wall again tonight. Unfortunately, the satellite Internet connection has been removed, so no live updates.
But I'll update tomorrow. The Forest Service has been talking about closing the aid camp and shutting down access to the border wall after the inauguration, so we'll see what happens.
Here's a pretty good article about some of the humanitarian desert aid work that groups I work with do along the border. We are all continuing on as normal, but also somewhat holding our breath waiting to see what happens.
Getting back to civilization now. As usual, quite a few interesting stories the last couple of days and nights. So far, though, no change to status of the migrant aid to camp or access to the border road.
One quick story. Just after dark last night, I stoked the fire at the aid camp near the end of the border wall, made dinner and sat around reading. About 8:30 p.m., I saw vehicle lights coming down the steep dirt road over in Mexico. About 10 minutes later, a young Guatemalan couple with a six month old baby showed up.
As usual, I welcomed them over, explained this was a camp for immigrants and asylum seekers and was the best place to wait for Border Patrol. They had just missed the 8 PM pick up, so would have to wait until 2 AM in the morning for the next one. I showed them where the water, food and porta potties were.
They have an interesting story and are probably extremely good candidates for asylum, but I'll tell that later.
What I will say now is that if the Forest Service closes the aid camp and Border Patrol closes the road, that young couple from Guatemala with the six month old child would have been left out there alone in freezing weather 20 miles from anywhere. They would have no food or water. They would either have to keep walking to stay warm, or would have to build a fire if they have the means to do so.
They are from Guatemala a tropical country. Do they understand the high fire risk in this area right now? Do they know how to make a fire to keep warm without starting a giant wildfire?
The human smuggling cartels don't care about the people they drop off. They are just cargo to them. There have been many people pushed around, through, or over the border fence needing serious medical attention. The fact that Samaritans have access to the border road and that there's an aid camp where people can wait saves lives.
It also makes the Border Patrol's job much much easier, something they readily acknowledge.
In this post I review what I'm looking for in a resume. I try to give practical advice based on both my experience and the feedback I've seen others give.
@msbellows Techbros love to be cute while at the same time they excuse being jerks with "I just call it like I see it." Well, we all saw an explosion, SpaceX.
I haven't heard definite reports yet on whether there was any property damage on the ground from the latest SpaceX explosion, but here's what's really wild: the US government is *absolutely liable* for any and all damage on the ground outside the US, for *any* launches from US territory, even private company launches.
Space law is weird already, and it's only going to get weirder as commercial launches push way beyond the Apollo-era Space Liability Convention and Outer Space Treaty.

Hi friends. The world for some of us is a little chaotic and the fediverse is an important escape from other social media for many. But it isn’t free and most instance operators accept donations to offset their costs. If you are able and don’t already, please consider supporting your instance to help keep the fediverse alive and healthy, assuming they accept donations.
For the InfoSec/Fedia donors, I appreciate your support.
@tadbithuman @me_valentijn @JohnJBurnsIII The ground will freeze if you are below zero for five days. Again the snow will help slow that and helps the ground from freezing more deeply.
I never thought about an attic. We'd never do that here. If you have poor insulation up there, the house heat will probably protect those pipes. If your insulation is good, your attic will be colder.
Attics can be surprisingly warm in winter. Much of that depends on a ton of factors.
@human3500 @me_valentijn @JohnJBurnsIII Apparently, it takes up up 5 days of sub zero temperatures for the ground to freeze. We have clay, it takes longer to freeze.
The risk is from power failure to drop indoor temperatures below freezing, which is how most of 2021 damage was caused. As long as you have indoor temperatures in the high 40s or higher, there is no issue with indoor water lines.
Peoples attics have exposed pipes in Texas, that may be an issue.
If the water mains are deeper than a foot or two, they are unlikely to freeze in a day or two as someone will be running / dripping water even if the ground froze that deep.
The feed to your house might be a concern. Your outside taps definitely are a concern. They will freeze in a day. But, they freeze outside in, meaning the ice will grow in the pipe farther into your house over time and if you heat your house, it won't be freezing much pipe.
You need to turn off your outside taps and drain any outside hoses or at least get the pressure in the hose out. That will give the ice room to expand.
Maybe your outside taps have an inside shutoff or the valve is inside your house. These are common here in Canada but our code expects winter. In the first case, shut off the inside tap and open the outside taps. This drains that bit of pipe.
I usually end up freezing an outside tap every year. If you get to it early, it shouldn't actually be a problem.
Whatever you do, don't heat your frozen pipes with a torch. Use a hair dryer and start with part of the pipe that isn't frozen. You want heat in the pipe to melt the ice in the opposite direction to how it formed.
If all of your pipes are exposed under your house and it freezes down there, you should be running water slowly continuously.
@human3500 @tadbithuman @me_valentijn @JohnJBurnsIII I'm in the upstairs of an old farmhouse outside of London and it's so hot up there constantly, even with vents blocked off, that I was really looking forward to getting outside the house today in the -14 weather. downstairs is always cold but upstairs it's burning hot. I can only imagine the attic (no access)
I too live in an old farmhouse. Downstairs there is no insulation (except for a 10 inch void in the walls). Upstairs is all spray foamed.
I only heat downstairs and the bathroom upstairs. we are never cold at night in the winter. the furnace never comes on at night by choice, or we'd cook.
@human3500 it's at the very bottom of the stairs, in the floor. problem is bad air circulation everywhere, especially downstairs, so they crank the furnace instead of setting up fans to circulate the air better. At least I can sometimes get fresh air by opening the windows. it was -10 yesturday and I had a window open for a few hours before it started to cool down
