One time I talked to an acquaintance about why she hadn’t tried the best taco truck that I love that is literally next to her house. She was like ‘I’m from the Midwest, flavor is just not for me, I know I won’t appreciate it’ and I laughed so much and I appreciated her self-awareness.

I then interviewed her about her fear of flavor and grease in an ethnographic exercise. I told everyone back home about it, and it was like telling them about aliens.

Sometimes my wife and I talk about how it must be weird to others that we sort of expect every single meal we eat (whether it’s food we cook or food we buy) to be incredible.

I know it sounds like an exhausting way to live, but where we are from (Singapore / Malaysia), eating poor quality food is seen as a waste of time, stomach space and soul

People who don’t care about food are treated with extreme suspicion in my culture, almost like.. they are aliens you can’t communicate with.

I was surprised to learn that in other cultures, people who care too much about food are perceived to be odd

Northern pike grilled an hour after being caught, on top of bread slathered in butter and strawberry jam, all topped with baked beans. That was 1975 and I can still taste it as if it were slightly burning my mouth right now.

Remembering the time I was contracted as a security consultant in 2002-ish to review network security, help with documention, and to harden company systems, when I was mansplained about... (wait for it)... security.

So I was sitting at my desk writing documentation in the very open office, when one of the programmers, I guess trying to brag or impress me, sits on the edge of my desk and says, "So, you know, I'm a hacker."

Me, who loves all things hacking and security related, replies, "Really? That's awesome!"

Him: "Yeah, so a computer hacker is someone who can [blah blah] and ..."

I quickly discover that he has zero clue I am the solo security consultant working at the place, and that I'm an actual hacker.

Me (thinking to myself): Okay, well everyone starts somewhere, and it looks like he the caught the hacker bug— Wait, is he... is he now explaining what a network is to me?

Realizing he is blissfully unaware that I touch computers on the daily, I decide to try an give him a subtle out.

So I slowly reach for my freshly bought Official (ISC)² Guide to the CISSP® CBK® book that was *checks notes* sitting between us on the desk next to my O'Reilly books.

I open it to the section titled "Domain 2: Telecommunications and Network Security" and continue to nod at his explanations.

You might have guessed it, but he did not notice.

@eniko reminds me of the several times male coworkers (not managers or bosses) asked me basic sec questions and I, naively believing they are really struggling to understand something, I explained it to them to just get a "ah I knew that, I was just testing out if you knew too" among other random crap.

It's not a huge surprise but yeah. I guess over the next couple of years we'll find out how much was actually Biden making decisions based on poor and incomplete information and how much was staffers running the country without him.
