Yeah, that’s a line (lie?) that gets harder to believe with every passing year. What capitalism is good at is turning innovation into ‘miracle products’ that exploit creators and innovators in order to make owners massive amounts of money. Look at the measure used… it’s usually ‘$X made!’ instead of lives improved.
And the innovations that truly change lives usually start in free work or gov funded work before being highjacked.

Ae, and as the idiom goes, what we measure is what we optimise for. I think the last NZ Labour government did something truly innovative when they built measures of child poverty into the Public Finance Act. If NatACT First haven't already reversed this, as they have so many other progressive reforms, I look forward to seeing the trend of these numbers across this term, and how it compares.

@emory Well, what you can get for it, at any given time, is the highest price the market will bear, as they say. It's only loosely coupled to the cost of bringing it to market, and in in a financialised economy, it's only loosely coupled to demand. The main variable that determines price is where on the wealth ladder the demand is coming from.

The further up the wealth ladder you go, the more finance potential buyers have access to, allowing them to bid up the price beyond their own current buying power. Further down, expression of demand is limited more and more to the liquidity people have right now, and predatory forms of finance like credit cards and payday loans.

Vanuatu has been raised to Level 3 DO NOT TRAVEL by the US State Department

Updated to a Level 3 due to infrastructure damage from an earthquake.

The U.S. Department of State advises U.S. citizens to reconsider travel to Vanuatu following the December 17, 2024, earthquake, which caused significant damage to local infrastructure. The U.S. government’s ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Vanuatu is limited, and departure options have been disrupted. My 11 year old doggo had a mass removed from the side of his head this morning. Doc got all they could out, but I can tell the doctor thinks it's cancerous, but wouldn't say before biopsy results. I'm kind of heartbroken. We didn't notice the swelling on the site until Monday, when we took him in. I hope we bought him some good time before he leaves us....😭

When it comes to sentiment over A.I., LinkedIn is the polar opposite of the Fediverse.

LinkedIn lunatics think A.I. will solve all problems, bake them a cake, and usher in a messianic new age.

I don’t know how far A.I. will go, but typically with anything – if both your aunt and your cab driver are hyped about it, that’s the sign things will be over soon.

I got myself a nice Hogswatch present. A nice little plasma cutter. It should cut mild steel up to 3/8 of an inch thick in a single pass, which is plenty for me because as far as anyone knows I’m not planning on building a Killdozer.

Yeah, the lamination would def. add cheap ballistic protection, and improve the mass/load properties. Didn't know about the thermal dynamics/properties/advantage. Good to know. And of course, not that it's even a thing we think about at all, other than as a hypothetical academic exercise.
