Here's the bottom line. No matter if your routers or other equipment are marketed and/or made by American firms or anywhere else including China, most consumer and SOHO gear is likely to have all manner for firmware flaws and security problems. Government warnings based on what-if and could-be concerns without evidence are worthless. This stuff is churned out as fast as possible with minimal concerns about security and privacy. So the focus on China is frankly 99% politics, and don't let politicians of either party convince you otherwise, they're all in the game.

Pity that when the ad company says I can't use an ad blocker, my alternative is to use… a browser by a *second* ad company, that has spyware and an AI chatbot block in, and that looks… I dunno. *waves arm* "like that".

(So flat. So flat it makes Chrome's recent interfaces look rich and helpful. And yet oddly, it also has HUGE aggro scrollbars on Windows that it doesn't display on Linux. Not sure what that's about.)

Sonic 3 is a good, fun movie*. I genuinely believe that the more weird lore shit they embrace, the more fun and the less generic superhero-y it comes out.

Also, there's so many great easter eggs, but it never goes full Ready Player One by making those references plot-critical — they're there to make fans laugh, and that's about it.

(*with the caveat that Jim Carrey is still a terrible human being who arguably is complicit in the deaths of hundreds of thousands)

yea, it took me a long time to round the corner from "Sonic is cringe" into "Sonic is cringe and that rocks" and I think you hit the nail on the head: the emotional tones are the consistent thing that everything else in the "narrative" portion of that universe orbits around

(although I guess you can argue that even the original game has emotional overtones if you ponder what's going on, Sonic's motivations for doing what he's doing, blah blah, but maybe that's hindsight)

@SnoopJ I may have to steal "Sonic is cringe and that rocks," it's a perfect summary, really. Anyway, I do think that even from the first Genesis games (and absolutely Sonic CD), they tried to have some kind of emotional storytelling. Sky Sanctuary Zone from S3&K is a really cool early experiment in video game narratives, I'd argue.

It's never tried to be coherent as a plot, but as you say, the *vibes* are always there and matter.

Today I visited a tiny public library in the main local authority building of a city in the East Midlands, England. I haven't rearranged any of the books, nor are these shelves specifically devoted to equality and diversity; it's just the non-fiction section.

If you have any friends in Florida or any of those other book-purging states, maybe show them this post. A library isn't supposed to contain only what you know (or think you know) already. It's supposed to challenge, enlighten and inspire.
