Enjoyed reading about the Parker Solar Probe as it prepares to skim the sun’s atmosphere - at a respectable (for humans) fraction of the speed of light - on Christmas Eve. Surviving that requires some amazing materials science!

Text Shot: The science instruments had to be hardened as well. As the probe flies into the Sun there's an instrument known as a Faraday cup that hangs out to measure ion and electron fluxes from the solar wind. Unique technologies were needed. The cup itself is made from sheets of Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum, with a melting point of about 4,260° Fahrenheit (2,349° C). Another challenge came from the electronic wiring, as normal cables would melt. So, the team at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and NASA grew sapphire crystal tubes to suspend the wiring and made the wires from niobium.

@AkaSci I'm gonna be honest, I RT'd without reading because I trust Ars and the summary had some pretty cool materials science. I had no idea we could build things that get that hot without melting.

Nice to see an APL that applies physics to things staying together rather than coming apart. ;)

It might actually make it collect more power throughout the day and seasons to charge the batteries.

Plus, remember that efficiency is not what matters in a use case like that. It just has to collect enough energy to charge the batteries enough to power the light when it should be lit.

Anyways, we're in early stages and the best designs will prove themselves out is my opinion.

Many people were totally cynical about the arrest warrant against Netanyahu, but I said that however much some countries may hem and haw about not wanting to execute it, the risk alone will constrain his freedom of movement.
