Once I spotted this bald eagle at the Phoenix Zoo, I had an immediate impression this bird was disgruntled if not outright pissed off. Being the national bird of the US, I thought of the present state of affairs in the US, especially the nasty politics. And then this quote came to mind “A republic, if you can keep it.”

The surfing competition is wild. It's like mostly nothing happening and then suddenly the most thrilling, death-defying shit for like 10 seconds. I just watched one lady get absolutely creamed by a wave, disappear under water for 10 seconds, then pop back up and swim for the next wave. Then I watched another lady almost get a perfect score by disappearing into the barrel of a wave entirely for several seconds. Incredible.

“Always ask yourself: Why is this lying bastard lying to me?” Perhaps these blunt words of advice for journalists interviewing politicians, attributed to the late foreign correspondent Louis Heren, have endured because they are seen as self-evidently true. That politicians lie is viewed as established fact.

Public confidence in lawmakers plunged to a record low last year in the wake of Partygate and other scandals: only 9% of British adults polled by Ipsos said that they trust politicians to tell the truth. Without trust, says Jennifer Nadel of the lobby group Compassion in Politics, faith in democracy is undermined. “If we can’t trust what politicians are saying, how can we decide who to vote for? We need to be able to rely on our politicians to tell the truth,” she explains.

Compassion in Politics has long been campaigning to introduce criminal penalties for political lying, with a petition launched in 2019 attracting more than 200,000 signatures. In a surprise move two days before the UK’s general election, the Welsh government committed to passing legislation that would make lying illegal for Senedd members and candidates, having previously opposed the measure. Under the plans, those found guilty of deliberate deception by an independent judicial process would be disqualified from office.

“We’re excited and optimistic,” Nadel says. “It’s unprecedented that the government has agreed to take this measure forward.” Although some countries have limited penalties for politicians who lie during election campaigning or when giving evidence to committees, Wales is the first in the world to propose legislation that would apply more broadly to lawmakers and candidates.

Compassion in Politics’ next challenge is to persuade Westminster to follow suit by banning MPs and parliamentary candidates from lying.

The campaign sprung from concern at the rapid normalisation of lies in politics. “We are slipping at an alarming speed into a post-truth era,” says Nadel. “We only have to look at what is happening in the United States.”

Fact-checkers at the Washington Post found that Donald Trump made 30,573 false or misleading claims during his presidency, averaging about 21 a day. “America is a warning of what can happen if this problem is allowed to go unchecked,” Nadel believes. “[Our proposals] are designed to stop [the UK] from getting to that stage.”

A use of the 🧵 symbol that works nicely for me, so I recommend it:

I sometimes publish a toot with public visibility, that is designed to be readable without further context. But at the same time, it is also a reply to a toot 🧵 by someone else, and a part of that other toot's thread.

In such cases, I'll use the "🧵" symbol at an appropriate place to point out that other toot, which you might want to look up by navigating to my toot's threat.

In 2016, a historically unprecedented incident took place.
And yet, barely anyone even noticed.
Even years later, we’ve failed to acknowledge it or to have begun the process of understanding it.
Because we still can’t even see it.
And that’s because this incident involved a woman -- And she was asking for it.

The woman was Hillary Clinton.
What she was asking for was votes.
And what she got was the single biggest outpouring of #misogyny in human history.

We can now say that -- Although no one ever does.
But this was an unprecedented previously unimaginable event.
Because 2016 was when the world’s first global instant mass communication technology
– social media
– crashed up against the most ancient of prejudices – misogyny.
And the result was an earthquake: Donald Trump.

In 2016, we weren’t prepared for it.
We didn’t see it coming.
We didn’t understand how these same social media platforms that have enabled us to share our thoughts instantly at a global scale
also facilitate the worst kinds of human communication.
How they are engineered to cater to our basest instincts and reward the clickiest, most hateful content.

But eight years on, we haven’t even begun to understand that lesson.
We didn’t listen to Hillary.
We haven’t yet realised that misogyny is one of the most dangerous weapons on Earth.
The best friend of authoritarians and oligarchs.
The handmaiden of tyrants.

Worst of all, we haven’t yet realised that misogyny represents the most urgent and pressing threat to global security.
Because it’s misogyny
– networked misogyny across multiple global platforms that will earn their tech bro owners billions upon billions of dollars
– that is going to decide the 2024 election.

And it’s misogyny that’s going to dictate the future of Nato,
the outcome of the war in Ukraine,
whether we have peace in Europe or more war.
And because this is going to be a firehose that will be directed at a single woman – Kamala Harris – it will be misogyny multiplied:
💥misogyny plus racism, 💥the most toxic combination of all.

This week comments resurfaced that Trump’s newly appointed running mate had made about the woman who looks certain to be the next Democrat candidate.
Comments from 2021, in which JD Vance dismissed Kamala Harris as a “childless cat lady”.
If that sounds vaguely familiar, you may recognise those exact words from the attacks that Brexiteers directed at me.
In my case, it was an assault that went on for years and created the permission for the same man who seeded the narrative to sue me in court.
I was gagged, the necessities of the court case silenced me.
Sticks and stones will break my bones etc.
But this was never about me. I was just the access point,
a way to shut the story down,
a viable target.
And this was an attack that achieved its goal.
Overnight, all reporting on the subject stopped dead.

⭐️But there are things that only veterans of the childless cat lady wars can know.

They used to call us witches because we knew shit.

We still do.

That’s what makes us so powerful.

And dangerous.

That’s what JD Vance understands:
our cat lady energy.

We’ve lived through culture wars before they even had that name,
before they invented memes and when they just burned us at the stake.

Before the toxic social media chimneys crank up the content.

Because shortly, the particulates will arrive,
will silently and stealthily and invisibly start clogging our bronchial pathways
even as the billionaire bros who own the platforms rake in record profits.

It’s not so much surveillance capitalism as disaster capitalism.

It took years for us to learn some of the basic facts of what happened in 2016
and it’s still just a partial view.

But we now know:

Russia attacked Clinton in exactly the same way that Trumpworld attacked Clinton,
in exactly the same way that they are attacking Kamala.

We now know how the Kremlin actually paid in roubles for Facebook to pump those messages out across US social media.

We now know that Cambridge Analytica,
on behalf of the Trump campaign,
created an anonymous Crooked Hillary campaign that it fed into the “bloodstream of the internet”.

But neither invented misogyny.
They just used it.

These were narratives the bros of the broverse were already spreading,
which the invisible hand of the social media algorithms were pumping into people’s feeds.

The same zombie narratives that have risen again for Kamala
and are already being stoked not just by YouTube edgelords and JD Vance fanboys
but Russia and China too.

Soon, we won’t even notice.

It’ll just be part of the air that we breathe.

A choking toxic misogynistic stew that will silently pour over the culture war trenches like mustard gas.

Darkness is coming.

This is the world social media created.

And we’re much further out than we thought.

so, here's an interesting question that I'd love some input on.

right now, the static site generator I use (https://getzola.org) has an optional "line numbers" mode for code blocks which is meant to display line numbers alongside a section of code. right now, this switches from outputting the code as a raw block of text to a table, where the line numbers are on the left and the lines are on the right.

my gut feeling is that the correct way to do this is to not use a table, and just find some other way of styling the code so that each line is prefixed with a number, and maybe you can toggle that on and off. but I don't actually know if this would be better for screen reader users or worse.

and this also occurred to me: I don't actually have any idea what the most common ways screen reader users interact with line numbers are. I personally would prefer to avoid adding extra javascript to this, so, that sets aside the option to do things like custom key combinations for revealing the line number, although I could do those instead and have some kind of fallback. although this wouldn't work nearly as well for mobile viewers, since that has much more limited support for key combinations. (maybe long press for line number?)

like, would it be obnoxious to just say the line number before every line, as if they were formatted as text? would it be helpful? I genuinely don't know since I don't develop this way, and would love to know what people think is best. this is a case where simply testing it out with a screen reader isn't enough: I know what the result would sound like, but I don't know if that's the result people would like to hear.

and it is worth saying, all of these options should ensure that you can just copy-paste the code into whatever editor you want and read it there. this is pretty doable with a table or any other method, and I'm not super worried about that aspect. mostly just what people who are browsing the site on their device would like as far as navigation goes.

my favorite stat is that if you count up the artists who made the billboard top 40 from 2000 to 2010, there were something like 60 or 70 bands. If you do the same for 2010 to 2020, you find 3 acts who were bands. Two of whom were LiveAid style supergroups, and one was the Beatles.

We don't listen to bands anymore.

Some will question my choice of driving a TDI: in the 10 years I owned my Passat, I travelled 250 thousand km, at 5 lts/100 kms, that's about 1,25 million liters, and it spewed out roughly 3,38 metric tons of CO2. If I had driven the same amount in a regular gaz fuelled little shitbox (I haven't seen any that does better than 6 lts/100 kms) that would have been at least 3,45 metric tons of CO2. I doubt any Hybrid can beat that. /1

/2 I invite you to do the Math:

- 1 liter of regular gaz produces 2,3 Kg of CO2
- 1 liter of diesel fuel produces 2,7 Kg of CO2

Diesel fuel produces more CO2 but since diesel engines are more efficient than gaz engines, less is needed to do the same work.

@mschomm I don't see how that calculator works, because I burned 1.25 million liters of diesel fuel to drive those 250 thousand kms over 10 years, and each liter produces 2,7 kg of CO2, so 2 digits tons figure can't be it, it's millions of kilogrammes, or thousands of tons.

as with appliances, from a green perspective, you're almost always best staying with what you have until it starts failing because replacing your vehicle is a lot worse than the efficiency of a new one.
That said, I've gone 205,000 km so far on my Volt and it is even more efficient than that mostly because of that first ~80km on electricity. See attached.
PS it was purchased used so the total fill ups don't match the total mileage.

@mikebabcock That's why I want to drive my 2012 model to the ground. Besides it's cheaper to maintain it than refinance a new one, even though VW are not cheap to keep running, but it is quality.
That car-makers caught on the Google-Micro$oft, and others, business model of selling your data, among other schemes, doesn't help either.

@mikebabcock I should also mention that I mostly do long hauls, I sat in my car 5 and a half hours non-stop yesterday to get back home from Gatineau. An Hybrid or EV makes no sense for me.

not to argue, but as the owner of one, I do a LOT of long hauls. That first free 80km and the regen braking make a big difference even to longer drives. When I originally did the math for myself before the purchase, I didn't think it would make the difference it does.
Ignoring overall fuel economy differences of the hybrid components (which you shouldn't), taking 80km of gas off a 500km trip makes a bigger difference than you'd think.
