Don't take this the wrong way, but the memes about Ellen Ripley being a childless cat lady are not correct.

The sequel, Aliens, established that Ripley had a daughter, Amanda, who died before Ripley returned to Earth.

Not withstanding, I think I know how Ripley would react to the marginalization of cat ladies.

I am poor. But I work with special needs students who love me and live a fulfilling life. I don't need anyone to fear me, I am content being appreciated. I am spending Christmas with the woman I love and our three gorgeous daughters.
We don't agree on everything, and that's okay.

The "cat lady" stereotype derives from the independence of cats, which can be linked w/ a suspicion of independent women. “A woman that chooses an animal that is arguably never entirely tamed is to be suspected of being untamable herself.” https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/27/us/cat-lady-explained-cec/index.html

Absolutely!
In the past single women with cats were often persecuted. Cats were portrayed as demons, and thought to be witch's familiars.
There is very dark history behind this stereotype.

If only every game in my library was awesome. Sadly, there’s a lot of clunkers. One example is Skyflower.

I want to like this game, I really do. It had so much potential. Who wouldn’t want a bullet hell top down shooter with RPG elements? To me, that sounds like a recipe for success.

But there’s a big problem: Skyflower is in “early access”.

I put “early access” in quotes because that’s a bald-faced lie if there ever was one. Skyflower has been in early access since Jun 2015. For nine solid years, there has been no indication that it will ever come out of early access.

In reality, Skyflower is abandoned.

Let’s call a spade a spade. The developer ain’t finishing it. They had ample time to complete it and it won’t be happening.

So we’re stuck with annoyances. There’s lots of graphical glitches. When a level starts, the music is already halfway through. Weirdly, the game is more difficult at the beginning than at the end.

Skyflower had so much potential. I like the basic visual aesthetic. The power ups are great. Specifically, I love how weapons get more and more badass as time goes on.

The developer, The Taco Heaven (a.k.a., Kirisame Jump) made another game, RAIN Project. They apparently finished that one.

You might wonder why I care, and it’s for this simple reason: I paid money for Skyflower. And I paid with the expectation that we’d have a finished game. Now this game may have been cheap, but if a transaction happened, developers should at least try to complete their work.

Games like Skyflower are why I no longer trust “Early Access” on Steam.

When thinking about Big Tech and in particular #Google, comparisons to the maxim about political systems may be relevant. The one of particular relevance is that "Democracy is the worst of all the systems, except for all the others."

Similarly, as much as I pound on Google's recent trajectories and what I view as a variety of unforced errors and poor user experiences (especially for user groups who are not seen by Google as being the most valuable, e.g., relating to account recoveries and lockouts), it is still true that in the Big Tech pantheon, it can still be argued that Google is the least bad.

This is not a trivial observation, nor do I expect everyone to agree with me.

We watched the #openingceremony and want to remind the world that France has made composting mandatory.

If we can compost on the scale of a country, we can fix the landfills and limit the greenhouse gasses that they generate.

That is how we can start working for the #climate and invest for the future.

Nihil Curits mastodon (AP)
Have you heard of the concept 'interpassivity'? It encapsulates the idea, especially with a view to various media delivering the opiate.
not particularly new, but yeah, that tracks. The Israelites of Jesus' time were allegedly pissed at him on many occasions because he didn't preach the revolution many of them dreamed of. Many folks rallied behind prophets (competitors to Jesus) who did promise them a revolution. A century or so (?) after Jesus' death Israelite militants succeeded in launching the long-awaited revolution, which was soundly and viciously crushed by the Romans.

I am certainly not defending that orange chump nor do I believe that he actually considers himself to be Christian in any sane definition of that religious belief, but I don't think that we should assert that he told his audience that he's not a Christian.

That part of the speech was mumbled too much imo to know for certain and by us asserting that we do know it reduces what trust his potential supporters might have in other things we say about him.
Kevin Leecaster mastodon (AP)
@Lats
That may be broadly true of the online tribal members, but the huge population of average Americans that don't even hardly pay attention to the news and consider themselves to be independents have a little more interest in honesty I think.

I hope that he's forced to clarify whether or not he considers himself a Christian though so having the issue get traction is probably good anyways really when I think about it.
Lats (314 ppm) mastodon (AP)
my observation in Australia is that the liberals tend to tie their messages in knots trying to win the battle of ideas while the conservatives use three word slogans that cut through. That has lead me to the point that liberals worry too much about the clear truth and explain too much while trying not to misrepresent. The other side bang on with their simple slogans and don’t care who they misrepresent.
