I recently spent two months in Turkey. Our tickets and stay were paid for by family, otherwise this is something we could never afford to do.
I don't know how to think about the trip. It was amazing and magical. But it was also incredibly difficult, painful and unpleasant.
It was hard for both myself and my husband (who is also autistic) to be out of our routines and familiar environment. I struggled especially with the bright sunlight, constant low level conflict with family, and almost never being alone.
At times I was on the edge of melt down and getting constant intrusive thoughts about self harm.
But the places I saw and things I experienced were absolutely amazing.
I'm struggling with anger at being forced so far out of my window of tolerance, but I agreed to do this so that seems unfair of me. Also, it was a gift, I didn't have to pay? And it was genuinely amazing?

Orange Hitler says: “You won’t have to vote anymore. Four years, it will be fixed, it will be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore. In four years, you won’t have to vote again."
Wow, this otherwise unremarkable 5 year old fridge has more electronics in it than I would have expected.
Controller is a Cypress (now Fujitsu) MB95F818K, quite beefy looking 8-bit micro with 60KB of flash and some bespoke one wire debug protocol (pin labeled on the board!)
Well, controller board is back in the fridge where it will (I hope) continue to keep our food cool. The mysteries of its firmware and comms remain locked away.
Meanwhile physical inspection gave no clues of problems with the +12V. Maybe its the LED strip in the fridge compartment that's become faulty. 🤞
Yeah, it's funny how we have internet fridges, but a fridge is the most set and forget appliance you could own. I guess one that sent notifications in the event of it losing power or the door being left open, but that's unlikely to be useful unless you are in the vicinity, in which case a beeper is going to be a much better alert.
If I had more time (and no one to tell me not to) I'd be very tempted to swap out the controller boards on all my whitegoods for open source microprocessors so that I could put my own damn firmware on them. So sick of having to go through the menu on my washing machine every time I put a load on, because the default cycle is not one I ever use. I would gladly pay over the odds for a dishwasher that had a published API so I could write my own programs.
@stib * Duty cycle is definitely one, a lot of fridges can hold temperature even with a slightly stuck door but they take a lot of power to do so so detecting this would be nice. * Also adjusting the set temperature to chill right down when power is cheap and let temps come up (to a limit) when prices spike. * A switchable damper integrated with the house climate system so that in winter, waste heat is kept inside the house but in summer waste heat gets ducted outside.
@stib Yeah... Maybe also it'd be useful to monitor the compressor duty cycle over time so you can tell when it might need regassing or new door seals. But... meh
I hope everyone saw this go by, that “fork to private repo, test with private key, delete fork” has been revealed as a dangerous antipattern and any access tokens or other secrets you might have tested through this pattern should be revoked promptly.
Part of secrets management _has_ to be understanding that if you put credentials through systems that aren’t purpose-built for managing credentials - like any SAAS-VCS! - you need to assume near-term compromise.
TIL that the debut album of Robson & Jerome (a singing duo made up of actors Robson Green and Jerome Flynn) held the record for selling 2 million copies in the UK in the fastest time, for nearly 20 years
#ParkRun 1 million. It is never ending. I had cake at half past 4 this morning. I wonder once again if I'm wired up back to front. Trying to pour some positive thinking into my motor, but it seems to be seized up. We know this is how it goes. I must overcome. Running is the mind killer etc. Let's go. hooray. whatever. Come on! We've got this! Let's get out there and *DO* this! Urgh. PMA! PMA! PMA! PMA!
It's good to acknowledge that.
Not a personal failing, at all.
Maybe you simply underestimated how taxing this would be, because you had no good frame of reference to estimate it.
