So my day ended up ok, just ok ... Just had a difficult customer that needed his watch fixed by today ... I don't like him, he doesn't like me at all ... There are only 3 people in Australia who can fix this pocket watch and that I have rebuilt this watch before he wanted to come here ... It wasn't a hard job, if you know what ya doing and have the correct equipment and materials ... It only took an hour and I was only going to charge him $357.00 ... And I must have slipped ...

~~$375~~$475 for a watch repair is something I'm not sure I get... The jeweler here last time I got my battery replaced, said my watch needed repair, and that they couldn't do it. Not sure if that was because they don't have the skills, or if they had too much work on. That watch cost I *think* $250.

I think that if you're saying only 3 people in Aus can repair it though... Charge whatever you bloody well please.

For anyone out there still using X, it appears that the platform is using user data to train its AI chatbot Grok — and it’s an opt-out process, not opt-in.

As @arstechnica reports, users of the platform have recently noticed a tickbox in X’s privacy settings, which needs to be checked in order to count your data out of Grok’s training. It’s not clear how long it’s been there for, but here’s how you find it so you can make that call yourself.

Morning folks. This is a hard one. I am sharing the go fund me for the family of Tylor Maxie, the Afro Indigenous man shot by toronto police on Tuesday.

Tylor suffers with paranoid schizophrenia and was having an episode at the time. Police took it upon themselves to shoot him as their only means of subduing Tylor and deescalating the situation leading to him near death in ICU after multiple surgeries.

Needless to say this is a heartbreaking and close to home reminder that police violence is at the root of the settler colonial project here, rife with racism and ableism. Only a day after Sonya Massey, who also suffered from schizophrenia was shot and killed by police.

It's fascinating to hear Michael Beckley misunderstand China, despite being well-informed on the raw facts. Because he's trying to cram those facts into a one-size-fits-all neoclassical economic frame. It simply doesn't fit a country with a totally different political-economic system from the US, and a massive, diverse territory with a huge population.

In one sentence Beckley says China can't keep growing its economy through public spending on infrastructure. Presumably because everything they need has now been built.

But later he mentions himself that the modernisation I saw in cities like Shezhen and Shanghai has barely touched many small-to-medium Chinese cites. Especially in more rural, inland provinces. Plenty of room there for turning govt spending into modern infrastructure, sustaining full employment for decades.

A Chinese academic I met at a conference in Hangzhou explained to me that this is exactly the CCP's plan.

To identify the most successful models from the development of the Pacific coast, and roll them out across the country. Replicating the coastal high speed rail system, to connect it to inland areas, was one of the first steps towards that. That was already well underway when I was there pre-pandemic.

Another area Beckley touched on is low education levels in rural areas. For the CCP, there's no point investing in advanced education in a province until it has the infrastructure to generate the kinds of industries that need highly educated people.

So from the CCP POV upgrading rural education systems comes after the first phase of inland high speed rail goes online. So once educated, they can easily travel to distant areas for work. Then return home when appropriate jobs are created.

This kind of strategy is invisible to Beckley because it doesn't fit the neoclassical macroeconomic frame he's squinting through.

As he says, he has a teleological view of how countries develop. The public investment phase is followed - as day follows night - by an aggressive pruning of the state ("structural adjustment"), and the newly rich taking over economic planning. There's no sign of that happening in China, ergo, it has to start stagnating.

Beckley's frame doesn't have room for the possibility that public investment can just keep creating and maintaining a country's infrastructure.

That this opens up new business opportunities. That the money spent pays more people to do productive jobs. Money they mostly spend, subsiding more business activity. That all this business activity, and wages and salaries, generates more taxes. Balancing the public books *and* allowing the government to invest more.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

Public investment in infrastructure also reduces a country's dependence on foreign capital. Infrastructure can be owned 100% in-country. So people aren't sending money off-shore every time they pay to use it. Making it, on paper, an "import".

Structurally adjusted countries, in contrast, constantly pay to "import" their own infrastructure. Forcing them to run on an export treadmill to balance their payments. Or increase their overseas borrowing, with interest, also an "import" .

A trap.

Like most critics of China, Beckley made passing references to "ghost cities" and "bridges to nowhere". In the US system, where infrastructure investment follows the financial interests of corporate investors, this does indeed make no sense.

But these developments are just stages in long term plans. New cities are built to create opportunities for rural people who want to urbanise, instead of waiting for them to fill the streets of fully populated existing cities, begging and starving.

Now I want to be clear that none of this is intended to praise the anti-democratic practices of the CCP. I believe it's possible to have, for example, public investment in infrastructure driven by decentralised, democratic planning. Not autocratic central planning.

Not only do I think this would be a huge improvement on the CCP system, it would also be much better than the post-Reagan system in the US. Which has neither public investment nor democratic planning.

But my point is that for Beckley, either China moves away from public infrastructure planning of any kind, like the US, or it can't grow. Therefore its economic growth has peaked.

Which is bizarre to me, considering the only thing keeping the US economy growing is massive overseas borrowing. Every year since their domestic oil extraction peaked. Much of it borrowed from China 🤔
