The silliness of the entire social media industry:

1) There are like 1000 Black women social media accounts that determine the center of gravity of social media. Where those accounts are, determine which social media network is the hot one. You can literally see these accounts in network graphs.

2) No one treats these 1000 accounts particularly well. No one listens to or prioritizes their needs.🤷🏿‍♂️

@aetataureate white supremacy is global, but that doesn’t mean the targets of racism are the same everywhere. The Harris supporters Mekka is referring to don’t live in Europe and I’m not convinced they’re a huge cultural influence on users posting in German, Italien, Dutch or Swedish.

For 🇩🇪 where Mastodon is based, the main targets of racism are probably of Turkish heritage. I’m not aware of US led calls to make Mastodon more hospitable to European muslims. Is that different?

The social media platform that is the most popular with young Black and brown women, is the one that grows.

Vine. Twitter. Instagram. YouTube.

And most recently: BlueSky.

People pretend that BlueSky just magically got traction one day, and started to grow. No.

A few Black women from Twitter who came to Mastodon, said "This place is trash!" went back to Twitter, tried BlueSky, said "Better!"

I can literally tell you the handle of the specific Black woman that started the move from Twitter to BlueSky: Aliafonzy. She's dope, and she's a friend of mine.

I can even show you the degrees of separation graph from her to open source maintainers, NBA players, Hugo winning authors, Grammy winning musicians, Hollywood actors, and politicians.

And I can tell you the exact problems that she faced originally on Twitter, then on Mastodon, and later on BlueSky. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I agree! An equally real cause of the unwelcome feeling that Black folk have. It's not imagined.

Many Mastodon users *don't want* Black users on Mastodon.🤷🏿‍♂️

Because what's hidden behind a lot of the "We don't like algorithms! We don't like viral content!" veneer, is an ugly side of "Even without algorithms, a lot of people like Beyonce, the WNBA, fashion, etc. And I think myself better than people who enjoy trivial things like popular music, sports, or clothes."

the bulk of users is not from the US, not naturally focussed on US politics or popular culture, and there is a bit of an aversion to losing Mastodon’s own ‘culture’.

Two things are salient about the group of Black women we are talking about: they are black and they are American. Your focus (understandably) is on the former. I’m trying to talk about the latter.

There are almost no Black people on Mastodon. There are white trans people, but there are almost no Black trans people. There are scientists, but almost no Black scientists.

When I'm done, Mastodon will be ~20% Black, and ~20% of the trans people on Mastodon will be Black.

This is going to "destroy" the culture, or it's going to "change," the culture, depending on how racist you are.

Mastodon is better social media. More people should have access to it. Black people.

I feel like the one of the lowest level human internet problems we haven’t solved is how to be around millions of people, many of whom vocally disapprove of at least some of our thoughts and actions, without letting our hyper-social status-sensitive primate brains either melt or devote themselves to arguing that all our positions are the right positions for everyone.
