Vehicle to grid (V2G) capability should be mandatory for all new EVs on security grounds.

EV owners should be briefed that they may be called upon formally to provide essential power.

Critical infrastructure such as hospitals should be provided with the necessary hardware and parking places to interface with a bank of EVs providing emergency power.

The attack on France today shows that resilience is way behind where it needs to be.

UK. In a national emergency, I would expect contingencies to be put in place by any government.

I am not talking about normal service outages but sabotage or attack.

Governments tend to see money spent on contingency planning as waste - so we ended up haemorrhaging cash when hit by Covid.

The reason that we hemorrhaged so much taxpayer money during the pandemic here in USA was pretty much solely because our conservative party was in charge.

Regardless of that debate, I wouldn't expect a consumer level mandate in our country for the government to take over EV batteries. I'm hoping we'll just invest in putting battery banks everywhere we have a transformer station and such or maybe even at every meter installation we could have government owned batteries too.

Distributed, autonomous networks are key, for sure. A 'national" grid running one type of control software is an appalling hostage to fortune.

US is not going to be attacked by Russia any time soon but for all European countries that is a real and growing threat.

Resilience by design is no longer academic for us.

I doubt it is any cheaper than buying new LFP cells directly from the manufacturers. Static energy storage doesn't need the high energy density of the Tesla cells.

Edit: I've been buying LFP cells for under $100 per kwh. I doubt that a Tesla battery pack will be less than that once you take into account shipping and dismantling costs

@X31Andy On the other hand, even if the cost is similar, it might be an issue of availability. (I don't know, and I'll admit to not having read the article.) This way they also get other parts and materials which they might be able to use, whether to repair other cars or for other purposes.

If the EVs have been declared totaled by the insurance companies than I wouldn't be surprised if they can't get the crashed vehicles for less than $100 kWh especially when the scrap value of the copper and other materials in the cars are also recovered along with the batteries.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! I'll get out to walk dogs shortly while it's still cool. Today offers decent weather before increasing heat beginning tomorrow.
Donny isn't feeling great. I got an appointment for him for next week with the veterinarian who now is the most senior at our clinic since the vet we'd been seeing for years retired earlier this summer. If Donny gets worse, I'll take him in for urgent care.
Not much else is going on here today.

Donald Trump has been doing all he can to avoid answering questions from law enforcement investigators for his entire life so I won't be surprised if he pleads the fifth once again over the incident with the school shooter incident in Pennsylvania too.

Chouette, je fais partie des 80% de la population mondiale qui n'a JAMAIS pris l'avion ! Je hais l'avion, petit ou grand, grrrr 🙁

D'ailleurs j'avais soutenu, à l'époque en 2012, Pierre Emmanuel Neurhor ce héros qui a été condamné à plusieurs mois de prison ferme pour avoir bloqué le décollage d'avions à Roissy en se mettant physiquement devant (pas moins de cinq fois !)
Je doute qu'aujourd'hui on puisse encore se rendre sur le tarmac des aéroports pour bloquer ces foutues machines à détruire le climat...
C'est dingue, quand on voit les aéroports bondés (comme en Chine aujourd'hui) ça fait vraiment peur !

On the Tip of my Tongue.

This is a closeup of a male ruby throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). The hummingbird was approaching a feeder and if you look closely and the end of his beak, you'll see the tip of his long tongue. The angle and light aren't just right to see his ruby throat but there is the slightest hint of red among the black.

"The extremely short legs of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird prevent it from walking or hopping. The best it can do is shuffle along a perch. Nevertheless, it scratches its head and neck by raising its foot up and over its wing." - allaboutbirds.org
