I was just talking to my car insurance company and they asked me what gender was listed on my license. It occurred to me that men and women have different rates at different age ranges.

But what about non-binary (or, more specifically, people with an X on their license) people?

I'd be very curious to hear from any trans and non-binary folks about whether car insurance rates were affected once license was switched over.

Does one have to be an iconoclast or revolutionary these days to be validly left? I consider myself to be left of center, and very much in favor of progressive policies.

However I find myself being disagreed with quite often, mostly for not advocating or cheering violence, "by any means possible" change, or revolutionary tactics. It would seem that I'm not viewed as authentically holding my view unless I advocate extreme, violent, or radical action to accomplish it.

Those seem like two different things to me.

How many goat sacrifices do the Java gods require to support named optional arguments to functions like Python? In the remaining time I have meetings, write docs, write tests, and sometimes even code. Nothing to complain about though, seeing how we are treated compared to people I know who work as taxi drivers or in elderly care, we programmers are basically treated as gods.

As for music, I like Hardstyle and Drum and Bass primarily. Examples: "Phuture Noize & Devin Wild - Waves", DnB: "Telomic & Susan H - Underwater". I'll be visiting the DnB festival "Liquicity festival" this weekend so I'm very hyped right now

Is cake a sort of bread?

So according to Merriam Webster bread is:
a usually baked and leavened food made of a mixture whose basic constituent is flour or meal

And cake is:
A: a breadlike food made from a dough or batter that is usually fried or baked in small flat shapes and is often unleavened
B: a sweet baked food made from a dough or thick batter usually containing flour and sugar and often shortening, eggs, and a raising agent (such as baking powder)

And yet some people don't think that cake is bread.

What's your opinion?
When I make it it's much wetter than that and definitely needs to to poured into a bread pan. This is for Irish Brown Bread, not for the white flour soda bread with currants and whatnot.
Here's a picture of the dough from a similar recipe to what I use

If you do a search for "Irish soda bread" you'll get almost all the same kind of pictures of X cut boules with some kind of add ins. Sounds like the brown bread is something different, but it's probably still yummy.

6 myths about mechanical keyboards that are no longer true

A white keyboard showing some buttons with a blue background colour such as the backspace, home, pgup, pgdn, end, alt, fn, and ctrl. The enter and space keys have images on them like cottages set against a sea view.
For better or worse, the “mech keeb” community is still a niche one, so there are many more people outside of it than the ones in the know. So, a regular PC user might still have some misconceptions about mechanical keyboards that are far from the truth.

These myths range across all aspects of mechanical keyboards, from the look and feel to the sound and price. Perhaps the only silver lining we have is that most of these myths are super easy to debunk, so people don’t have an excuse to stay uninformed any longer.

It’s always interesting to me, no matter what the technology, so many people tend to get hung up about issues that existed when it launched, and those perceptions stubbornly persist. Yes you can buy really cheap membrane keyboards, but the experience is not the same, and a better keyboard is going to last you a long time. Both a keyboard and mouse are intensively used with a computer, so you may as well be a bit more discerning when choosing them. I’ve realised over time too that RGB colour lights are not the biggest thing (unless you want to set certain shortcut keys in their own colours) but I really do value backlit keys to see them clearer (I do visual typing not touch typing).

See xda-developers.com/mechanical-…

I tried a new ergonomic mechanical keyboard recently that I was quite excited by, but with my current desk a thicker keyboard was entirely unworkable. The thin profile of the Apple full-size desktop keyboards I've been using for the past few years win over all the other aspects. I think I've become quite attached to the short travel of chicklet keys too.

I do wish I could change/replace some of the keycaps though....

Which are you favorite non-English movies, series etc?

If not favorite, ones that touched you in some way.

I'll start by mentioning some movies from my mother tongue(Malayalam of Kerala, India):
* Mumbai Police
A crime thriller (Came out almost 2 decades ago n was very striking for the time)
* KammaraSambhavam
Political/Historic satire/drama (The main actor has some cases on him, but the movie is quite good)
* Kathavasheshan
* Devasuram
Conservative sigma male upper class Kerala dude getting character development. I really liked how the transformation happened in it
* Maheshinte Parthikaaram (Mahesh's Revenge)
Not an action movie.

From my country, but not in my mother tongue:
* Super Deluxe - A Tamil movie that I recently watched, quite unique
* Enthiran (Robot), a Tamil movie
Has over the top stuff, but is fun to watch
* Viduthalai(Liberation), another Tamil movie
* Agent Vinod - A Hindi spy-comedy movie

The anime that I like are Hunter x Hunter, Parasyte, Samurai Flamenco, Gintama.

One more mention for Dark, absolutely the best thing on Netflix IMO.

Others:
  • Neuvas Rienas (9 queens) - an excellent Argentinian heist/scam film with quite a cool look. Like a mix of Ocean's Eleven (plotwise) and the Bourne films (visually).
  • Intacto - interesting Spanish movie about people who are able to steal others' luck. I could imagine Christopher Nolan doing an English language remake.
  • Le Havre - fun French film about an old man helping shelter a child who is in the country illegally. Very funny.
  • Akira - obviously
  • Ringu - original Japanese version. Terrifying.
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - quite an obvious choice, but it absolutely blew me away when it came out.
  • The Killing - Danish TV show. Not seen the American remake, but the original is amazing
  • Oldboy - Korean movie, as above, remade, but I've only seen this. I suspect this one is better!
  • Godzilla Minus One - monsters! And the suffering of post WW2 Japan! Odd mix, but it works!
  • 8 Femmes - very funny French murder mystery. Recently remade (pretty well) in Italian as 7 Women and a Murder.
  • Duet for Cannibals - very strange Swedish film I saw recently about two couples and some strange living/working arrangements.
  • Rashomon - classic Japanese movie, where we see the same event from 3 different perspectives
  • Taxi - brilliant French heist/crime/driving movie, with some superb car chases
So many more, but this list is getting too long!
This entry was edited (4 months ago)
For a serious drama: Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, a shockingly good pair of French films that start when an idealistic city dweller moves out to the countryside to start farming on some valuable land that the locals would rather went to them.

Much less seriously: Le Concert. A French comedy-drama about a Russian conductor forced out of his prestigious role after a falling out with the Soviet leadership, who many years later gets an opportunity to re-form his orchestra out of a rag-tag group who haven't played in years, and travel with them to Paris to give the eponymous concert, performing the same piece that he was conducting at the moment a KGB agent stormed in to strip him of his title. There are some more layers to it that give the movie some brilliant genuine heart, in addition to the hilarious hijinks of the premise.

I'll just add an extra one that doesn't really fit, but is kinda close. Death and the Maiden, by Ariel Dorfman. Doesn't fit both because it's a play rather than a movie or TV show, and because it might be originally English (I'm honestly not sure and have seen contrary answers about it—even in my copy of the play itself it's unclear, with references to the "world premiere" in England being after it "was staged and opened in...Chile"). But regardless of the original language, it's very much not from an anglo perspective, being written by a Chilean and set in post-Pinochet Chile (technically, it's described as being potentially any country post dictatorship, but it's primarily written for Chile). It's about a husband who accidentally welcomes into their home a man whom his wife swears was her warden and rapist while she was imprisoned by the dictatorial regime, and the play is all centred around "is she right, and will her husband believe her?"

How Do You Handle Loud Neighbors?

My upstairs neighbors seem to like clog dancing at 2am. What would you do?
corsicanguppy doesn't like this.
Update: Thanks for the advice. Particularly, they may not realize they are loud. That was something I hadn't considered. I knocked on the door, and no one answered. I know someone is up there, because they walk like a dinosaur. Based on their steps during the day, I imagine they are quite heavy set, know how loud they walk, and could be embarrassed to open the door. I will try again later, and hopefully a positive update will follow.

But, if this turns into a game of noise, I have a solution: make them louder. I have access to an ultra sonics lab. They'll be loud enough I won't need to call in a noise compaint. The rest of the complex will come with torches and pitchforks. Though I believe this can be solved diplomatically.

Read some books on the subject

Never Split the Difference might be appropriate. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion is a great read. Getting to Yes/Getting Past No may also be decent.

Understand "what kind of cards you're sitting on". Before that even happens, ensure that you have good cards

Concrete example: You're looking to increase your salary. You can do it either by convincing your current workplace to increase it, or you can look for a new job.

The cards you're sitting on: How valuable you are to the company, and how likely you are to leave if you don't get what you want.

How to improve your hand before you get to the negotiating table: Try getting some competing offers for jobs.

If you're the less experienced negotiator, avoid negotiating live

When negotiating salary for a new position, the recruiter likely has far more experience negotiating. They will know techniques to try to get you to commit to a lower number than is possible. To avoid this from happening, move negotiations from in-person/on the phone to email. Give yourself a lot of time to process all information.

Kamala Harris May Have Locked Down The Gen Z Vote With This Pop Star's Endorsement

excitement about a potential Harris ticket appeared to reach a fever pitch when English singer Charli XCX weighed in online that evening.

Vouching for Harris with a reference to her latest studio album, “Brat,” the “365” singer took to X, formerly Twitter, to tell her 3.6 million followers, “Kamala IS brat.”

The tweet had reached over 30 million people by Monday afternoon.

Though the shout-out may have seemed snide to the uninitiated, dubbing Harris a “brat” was as strong an endorsement as ever for those in the know.
kamala IS brat

— Charli (@charli_xcx) July 22, 2024

The amount this single tweet may have just done for the youth vote is not insignificant. https://t[.]co/VyQQVZnKmE

— David Hogg 🟧 (@davidhogg111) July 22, 2024

Parts of the internet have been saturated with “Brat” references since the album came out in June, leading many to christen the season “Brat Summer.”

Political insiders who understood the reference used their platforms to stress how much sway Charli’s co-sign could have with young voters, who were feeling largely disaffected by the Biden vs. Donald Trump rematch.

When Gen-Z activist David Hogg weighed in, he posted, “The amount this single tweet may have just done for the youth vote is not insignificant.”
