Do you prefer digital or actual books

I can't help but always worry that one day I'll need paper books. I don't know what it is, but I feel like I should start collecting paper books instead of every single book I have is on my Kobo. Which do you do? If you get paper books, is there a source that sells cheaper books. Books are kind of pricey where I look.

 Shortest Day
(Susan Cooper)
So the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow‐white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, reveling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us ‐ listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!

Death Villa is run by a mysterious man who wears a cane basket on his head, with a bead curtain covering his face. He recruits Lu into his evil scheme....

Greek royals to make major change for first time in 50 years – details

Paywalled article:
Federal gov. approves $50 million to plan PNW high speed rail. Here’s what it means for WA

The Federal Railroad Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation, has awarded $49.7 to support the proposed high-speed train across the Pacific Northwest, a group of Washington legislators announced in a press release on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The long-discussed rail project would provide train service between Portland, Oregon, Seattle, and Vancouver, British Columbia, at speeds reaching 250 miles per hour. In the press release, state legislators said passengers would be able to travel between Seattle and Portland in under an hour.

“The Cascadia corridor is home to 10 million people and growing—bringing high speed rail speed to the region will be transformative, allowing Washingtonians to travel much faster and more easily between Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and communities in between,” Senator Patty Murray stated in the press release.

Will the Cascadia High-Speed Rail be ready soon? While the award is a boon for the project, it will only cover the planning phase. “This federal award is an important step forward for the Cascadia High-Speed Rail project and will support critical planning, community engagement, and initial design activities,” Murray stated.

Still, a Washington State Department of Transportation spokesperson said the funding will go a long way towards making the project a reality. “I think it gives it a strong likelihood, as long as the programs continue to be supported, and there’s a lot of support,” WSDOT Cascadia High-Speed Rail and Interstate 5 Program Administrator Ron Pate told McClatchy in a phone call.

What is next for WA’s new train? According to the press release, the money from the award will be used to determine the best route for the railroad, identify long-term construction projects that it would require and fund community outreach efforts.

Officials will now begin working with residents of the region, including tribes, to come up with a plan for the high-speed rail. “This funding will enable the state to work with locals to develop the best possible high-speed passenger rail route and someday give Washingtonians the option to skip the highway and reach their destination faster,” Sen. Cantwell stated in the press release.

According to DOT’s Pate, the funding will allow the project to move to its second phase. “First, we were awarded in the [Corridor Identification and Development] program, $500,000 to work through step one. And in step one, you develop the scope, schedule and budget to do the service development plan, to really look at how this system would function in two countries and two states,” Pate said.

With the new funding, Pate said the team working on the project can start developing the plan itself. “The service development plan work can start now, we’ve obligated those funds,” Pate said. “So our team is getting ready to go right after the first of the year to start doing a project management plan for that, and then work through the tasks that FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) has required for a service development plan.”

While Pate said there isn’t a set timeline for the project as a whole, he estimates that this next step will take four to five years. Where would WA’s high-speed rail stop? While the goal of the project is to connect the Portland, Seattle and Vancouver metropolitan areas, it would also include “points between and beyond,” according to WSDOT.

Cascadia Rail, a nonprofit that advocates for the project, mentions potential stops in Kelso, Centralia, Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, Everett, Mount Vernon and Bellingham in its preliminary map of the project. In the meantime, there are other train options currently in the region, though they don’t run as quickly or go as far.

Amtrak Cascades features six stops between Portland and Seattle – Vancouver, Kelso-Longview, Centralia, Olympia-Lacey, Tacoma and Tukwila. It also stops in Edmonds, Everett, Stanwood, Mount Vernon and Bellingham on the way to British Columbia. The high-speed rail would presumably have fewer stops in order to ensure faster travel speeds, although some of those areas will likely see stops as well.

“Connecting the Cascadia region with modern, efficient transportation will create jobs, boost economic growth, and reduce emissions, all while making travel faster and more convenient,” Congresswoman Suzan DelBene stated in the press release. A 2019 WSDOT analysis estimated that the rail line would serve between 1.7 and 3.1 million riders a year once it opens, while creating $355 million in economic growth for the region in the long run and reducing carbon emissions by six million metric in its first four decades.

This USB-C cable can rotate 360 degrees for optimal cable management

The image shows a workspace scene with a laptop computer connected to a power adapter via a cable. In the foreground is a power strip with multiple outlets, a white power adapter, and a laptop. The background includes a gray wall, hinting at a modern, minimalist workspace. The overall setting suggests a home office or a clean, organized work area. The cable shows a 90-degree bend where it protrudes from the laptop's socket.
USB-C was a great step forward, removing the awkward “try to plug in the cable, doesn’t fit, rotate 180 degrees, still doesn’t fit” dance, but cable management is still a pain. If you wish your cables didn’t stick out at awkward angles and could rotate to fit your needs best, one Japanese company has your back—with a catch.

So whilst it will deliver 240W of charging power, actual data transfer rates are stuck at USB 2.0 rates. I can see that data throughput is going to be more sensitive than power delivery. And right now it is only available from their website.

Still, let’s hope this idea takes off and improvements can be made.

He’s anti-democracy and pro-Trump

-- The obscure ‘dark enlightenment’ blogger influencing the next US administration

-- #Curtis #Yarvin is hardly a household name in US politics.

But the “neoreactionary” thinker and far-right blogger is emerging as a serious intellectual influence on key figures in Donald Trump’s coming administration
-- in particular over potential threats to US democracy.

Yarvin, who considers liberal democracy as a decadent enemy to be dismantled,
is intellectually influential on vice president-elect JD Vance
and close to several proposed Trump appointees.

The aftermath of Trump’s election victory has seen actions and rhetoric from Trump and his lieutenants that closely resemble Yarvin’s public proposals for taking autocratic power in America.

Trump’s legal moves against critics in the media,
Elon Musk’s promises to pare government spending to the bone,
and the deployment of the Maga base against Republican lawmakers who have criticized controversial nominees like Pete Hegseth
are among the measures that resemble elements of Yarvin’s strategy for displacing liberal democracy in the US.

One of the venues in which Yarvin has articulated the strategy include a podcast hosted by #Michael #Anton, a writer and academic whom Trump last week appointed to work in a senior role under secretary of state nominee Marco Rubio.

Although Yarvin once described Vance as a “random normie politician I’ve barely even met”
in a July Substack post, in October the Verge reported that “no one online has shaped Vance’s thinking more”.

The growing parallels between the incoming administration’s actions
– especially Vance’s views
– and Yarvin’s suggestions raise questions about his influence.

Robert Evans, an extremism researcher and the host of the podcast "Behind the Bastards", recorded a two-part series on Yarvin.

“He didn’t fall out of a coconut tree. He emerged into a rightwing media space where they had been talking about the evils of liberal media and corrupt academic institutions for decades,” he said.

“He has influenced a lot of people in the incoming administration and a lot of other influential people on the right.
But a lot of the stuff he advocates is the same windmills Republicans have been tilting at for a while,” Evans continued.

“What’s unique is his way of rebranding or repackaging old reactionary ideas in a way that appealed to libertarian-minded kids in the tech industry,
and in eventually getting some of them to embrace a lot of far-right ideas,” he said.

“That’s the novelty of Yarvin and that’s his real accomplishment.”

Anton and Yarvin’s May 2021 conversation was recorded for the podcast of the American Mind,
a publication of the powerful rightwing #Claremont #Institute,
where Anton is a senior fellow,
and whose growing influence during the Trump era has seen it described as the “nerve center of the American right”.

💥On 8 December, Trump’s transition team announced that Anton would be appointed director of policy planning at the state department.

Anton also served in a communications role in Trump’s first-term national security council from February 2017 until April 2018,
resigning the day before neoconservative John Bolton assumed the role of national security adviser.

After leaving the first Trump administration, Anton did not abandon Trump,
but continued writing about US liberal democracy in bleak terms.

In "Up from Conservatism",
a 2023 anthology of essays edited by the executive director of Claremont’s "Center for the American Way of Life", Arthur Milikh,
Anton wrote that
“the United States peaked around 1965”,
and that Americans are ruled by
“a network of unelected bureaucrats … corporate-tech-finance senior management, ‘experts’ who set the boundaries of acceptable opinion,
and media figures who police those boundaries”.

Anton continued the discussion in sections headed
“The universities have become evil”,
“Our economy is fake”,
“The people are corrupt”,
“Our civilization has lost the will to live”.

His and Yarvin’s conversation was ostensibly about his 2020 book,
"The Stakes".

That book was controversial even on the right for its prolonged consideration of autocratic “Caesarism”
as a means of resolving American decadence.

In the book, he defined #Caesarism as a “form of one-man rule:
halfway … between monarchy and tyranny”.

He adds, though, that
“Caesarism is not tyranny, which, strictly understood,
is a regime that usurps a legitimate and functioning government”,
whereas Caesarism implements “authoritarian one-man rule partially legitimized by necessity”

– that is,
“the breakdown of republican, constitutional rule”,
adding that
“a nation no longer capable of ruling itself must yet be ruled”.

He writes that a
💥“Red Caesar” could be attractive to
“the reds” in the Republican coalition,
who he says are
“under constant rhetorical, political, and, increasingly, physical attack,
especially in blue states”,
-- making them “more likely to turn to a Caesar”.

Anton stops short of openly calling for authoritarian rule,
but in general, he writes that the advantages of Caesarism include
“continuity and stability”
and “the prospect of avoiding conflict”,
and that it “tends to engender calm”.
