We got mice in the garden.
I wouldn't care, but we also got rabbits and mice are known to transmit nasty diseases to them.
So we got a trap to catch them alive.
Whenever i catch one i bring them to the nearby woods.
Today I found another dead mouse in the trap.
Probably frozen to death.
I told the dead body that I am sorry and dumped it in the trash with the trap.
Now I will build a mousehouse with snacks and cozy warm stuff inside so a catched mouse will survive.

I've been meaning to do this (the electronics part) as well. I have mice in my house, and use live traps, but if I don't notice shortly after they're caught, the poor mice expire after a few hours (I think psychologically), which is not my goal at all. 😞

It works!
The mousetrap has a sensor and a LED.
I used esphome, which is great (besides the YAML)

Get the esphome buildfile below.

The ESP32 is in deepsleep and wakes up when A2 is pulled high (via 10k resistor).
The pin is normally also connected to GND via 2 wires that rip apart when the trap triggers.

Then it makes a big red LED shine that is connected on pin 9.

It could also do things on home assistant, but I don't have a homeassi here.

Wie holst du die Maus da wieder raus? Nimmst du die ganz Box mit und die hat irgendwo eine Tür?

(Ich habe ein vergleichbares Problem in der Garage und dort 3 Fallen aufgestellt, die baugleich zu deiner zu sein scheinen.)

I've awakened early.

It's Caturday. It's May 11, 2024 and that means it was one year ago today that I first fed Ginza. I had been seeing her around in the weeks prior and earlier prior to the photo, I had taken a bag of garbage to the bin. I spotted her underneath the light blue vehicle and when I went back to my apartment, I put some dry kibble in the plastic dish, brought it out and put it down in the empty parking space. Then backed away until finally she came out. #CatsOfMastodon #Caturday

Observations:

1. Why, after all these years, if I import a video and just start playing, do I get framedrops and audio hitches? Is this like the thing where you have to go into a preferences dialog and specifically check a box or Blender won't use your GPU? I told it to use the video card for "cycles" but I don't know what it's doing for video playback.

2. Do I have to type a number in here by hand to get a video longer than 4 seconds? Why can't it just expand to the length of what I imported?

Okay. My daydream from 2020 of "wow, this Blender video editor is very close to nice, I bet if I come out in 4 years they'll have it all polished and it'll be great" is not bearing out.

My current walk-away point is that if you want to edit time properties— start, end, strip start— they're *shown* in the interface like 01:34:42, like HH:MM:SS. But you can't enter like that. If you click to edit a field, 01:34:42 suddenly transforms to a frame number, like 519242. What do I do with that?

What I want: To type in a box "crop from 1:20:24 to 1:20:53" and have the video editor do that.

What every GUI editor does: Carefully pixel-position your mouse to exactly 1:20:24 on this very long line and drag it until the box says 1:20:52

What Blender does: "Simply type '1*60*60*60+20*60*60+24*60 into the box to calculate the frame number you want"

In kdenlive you can't do that in a single action, but you can type in the timecode to position the playhead, cut at position (Shift+R or Ctrl+Shift+R depending if you want to cut one selected clip or all clips at that position)

just off memory (haven't used this recently) but I did use Blender for VFX and in the motion tracking workspace I remember having to press a button called "Prefetch" to avoid the hitching issue. Similarly, there was a button next to that called "Set scene frames" that would set the scene frame count to match the video. However, I still had to manually configure the FPS.

i did manage to get it to freeze up by setting a Strip Offset Start 1 hour into the video and then trying to undo that (when it did something very surprising)

I don't support the death penalty. I'm not a pacifist, but I think violence should be a last resort.

Just took Frank out for a drive and to get him a drink. And it occured to me that I got him in late December 2008 so just looked it up. Found on Ebay, won for $511, brought home Dec 20th 2008. Looking like this.

Previous owner's mum had been in a crash, the rear beam was bent. Wheel was dug into the side and needed crowbarring to drive him from tow truck to home.

Came with the mandatory boot full of junk, parts and random wheels. 7 in total, 3 of one kind, 1 of its own, 3 of another kind.

Previous owner had let his mate paint him British Racing Green(!) very badly, over the rubbers too. Was born Diamond Silver Metallic, as you can see from the boot.

Remnants of an after market air con system left behind, plus fuse box just swinging in the wind. Both taillights busted, and these are the facelift model and I was soon to discover how hard it was to find replacements for a model that only lasted about three years.

First things first. Front seats were shagged as they are like Mk1 seats and just shit after decades of use. Like sitting in pudding. So they came out, and some Mk3 Golf seats were swapped in. Much more comfy.

Also discovered that his rear disc brake conversion was done using Ford discs poorly, so that had to go. Usually it's drums up back.

Rear beam had to be replaced. Sourced another from a wrecking yard Passat. Powder coaters near us did a run of fire extinguishers every night so we'd drop off car parts and have them come back looking cheery and red.

Aaaand then Frank's engine got rebuilt, new bearings, new rings.

And as the engine was out, resprayed the engine bay Mars Red. This is a VW colour and was used on Passats but not on the ones imported here so he's the only one that I know of.

The exhaust was a piece of straight through drainpipe 🤦‍♂️

Took him to an exhaust shop where an old dude had worked on Passat before, and he made a beautiful new system.

After painting (which is the quick part) I spent a month wet polishing him every night after work and all day on weekends.

The bugs were not bad, caught most before it dried 😀

Found a few wheels for him and settled on some Audi ones as they fit and seem approriate. (Audi built the first and second generation Passats alongside their brother the Audi 80/Fox).

The facelift also has the world's puniest chin spoiler, remants of which were on him when he arrived. I wrote to the lovely people at the Audi vintage parts dept and they were so helpful and found one for me! NOS!

So after a couple years of searching for taillights, I finally tracked some down. We'd rebuilt the rear end, replaced the brakes, wheels, seats, painted him....was time to register the old boy. He got back on the road in 2010 and became one of my dailies....until 2013 when I blew up his engine hooning er driving in a brisk manner down a freeway. 😥

One cracked bottom end. DOH!

Friend who rallies Mk1 Golfs donated one his blocks to the cause.
