wondering if someone already asked you the same question, but its okay, thanks.

it seems that @gancio also not very active on their mastodon account. asked on their IRC channel, but only 1 user online. maybe I should really ask through email.

I decided to use gancio as the federated event aggregator because I have trouble with compiling mobilizon. and also gath.io is kinda not what I am looking for (despite maybe I could tolerate with it)

The servers are connected, so you can see and follow people from other servers. For example you and I are on different servers, but we are talking now.

Because the servers are connected, you don't need accounts on every server.

It's like email, you can email anyone even if they're using a different provider because the different providers are connected.

I haven't seen Bonfire operating in the wild, but my understanding is that Bonfire will optionally allow people to store their data locally on home hardware, while the actual instance they are part of operates remotely.

Is there a comprehensive guide on how the various apps (mastodon, lemmy, pixelfeed youNameIt) are meant to work together? For instance I managed once to follow a lemmy community with my mastodon account, but I can't post there (I think).

There's nothing that covers interactions between all of them AFAIK, as there are so many of them and their development changes the interactions over time.

Usually you can follow accounts anywhere from Mastodon, and reply to posts too, but if there are features in the platform that Mastodon doesn't have then you won't be able to access those.

Best way to test is to paste an account's Fediverse address into the search box on Mastodon and see what appears: https://fedi.tips/whats-my-accounts-address-how-do-i-follow-other-peoples-addresses-how-can-people-follow-my-address/

I think I get it - I wondered if I can use mastodon with my lemmy account, but since lemmy only thinks in communities & cares little for users and hashtags, it won't work.
Is it correct that if my lemmy server also hosted mastodon, I could use one account for both? (with separate apps/webapps)

No, you can't use the same account on different servers, even if they're using the same software. Each server is independent as the network is decentralised.

I could imagine that in Tusky I see new posts in the lemmy-communities I follow, but in Voyager no mastodon posts with hashtags I follow (because lemmy does not do that)

You can only log in on one server with one account. You can be logged in on many different apps, but they all have to be the same server if you're using one account.

If you want to log in on a different server, you need a separate account.

However, most apps let you log in with several accounts at once and then switch between them within the app.

Yes, there's a Fediverse livestreaming platform called @owncast which is a bit like Twitch.

People on Mastodon etc can follow OwnCast accounts, and when the stream goes live they will see a post in their timelines about it. Also, they can optionally use their Mastodon etc accounts to verify their identity in OwnCast chat. More info at https://owncast.online

The Fediverse video publishing platform PeerTube also has livestreaming support, but it is not as sophisticated as OwnCast.

how does the trends and the hashtag exploration work? On the official Android mastodon app there is an explore tab with trending hashtags and the stats (of the summary page) look very low compared to the real values (when clicking a hashtag). It feels disconnected 🤔

The number stats on the summary page are not very reliable and I would just ignore them. (They have perhaps set the timer for counting things in the stats too low?)

Just click through to a hashtag to see the real situation. Also, graphs tend to be more useful than numbers as they show a larger amount of time on some apps.

I indeed have a question. I have read that it is possible to mute posts by hashtags per user. While I know how mute hashtags in general I don't know how to do this per user.

For example I follow someone who posts a lot about new games on steam. This floods my timeline. The same person does nice art posts. Therefore I would like to mute the steam hashtag for this user but not the other posts.

As far as I know it is not possible to do that on Mastodon?

The nearest I can think of is that you can mute a user's boosts by going to their profle, clicking ⋯ and then "hide boosts". However, this wouldn't mute their own posts.

Maybe you could set up a filter for words like "steam" etc? It would filter everyone's posts, but if you don't want to see that topic at all maybe it might help?

Thank you. Filtering everyone's posts won't help. I really want to have it only for one user. This one posts really much about steam games flogging my timeline. I am not against the topic in general.

Unfortunately I can't remember where I read that this should be possible. I thought it is a little hidden like it is when you want to mute posts per user if in a language you don't understand. Took a little till I found out it's hidden in the user profile.

To boost a post you just click on the arrows icon that looks like this 🔁

It doesn't matter which instance the post is on, you can still boost it and it will become visible to everyone who follows you.

1) Ask your server admin if they can help with getting the email changed. Your server's admin account is @Mastodon but I'm guessing they might not reply, so you could also try emailing them at staff@mastodon.social

2) The lock by your post means you've set your default post visibility to be followers-only. It means only followers and people you mention in the post can see your posts. You can set a different post visibility by clicking the lock when you are making the post.

I'm using more filters these days, to turn down the firehose slightly.

I understand I can do OR filtering (ie filter if one of a set of terms is found). Is there a way to do AND filtering (filter only if all terms are found)?

The reason that I ask is that I want to filter certain terms but only for certain accounts, so if there's a direct way of doing that then that would work for my case too.

Will we ever get quote toots? W/o them it’s like a bicycle w/training wheels on. (Same w/not showing how many boosts & faves a toot has.)

As it is, using the web interface, when someone posts with a link to another post, I go to click the link & it opens as a new tab on that instance, where I’m not logged in

As far as quote toots on Mastodon goes, that's in the hands of the Mastodon developers. It's on their roadmap as "planned" but the roadmap hasn't been updated in a while so it's difficult to tell how far along the feature is. (Some features still on the roadmap have already been implemented, others haven't.)

When I recently got a new phone, tl old one being lost or stolen, the Mastodon app didn't transfer to new phone. I downloaded what appears to be a newer version and lost translation function..
Translation button used to reside beneath non English posts, but it's gone. How to get it back?
Lost the bookmark button too. Is it no longer possible to bookmark? Any way to retrieve previously bookmarked items?
Also no longer have ability to mute accounts
for specific time periods. What to do?

Is it an Android or iPhone?

You can probably make bookmarks on newer versions by clicking the ⋯ on a post, and using the bookmark option in the menu that appears?

You might want to try logging in on your server's website (for you that's https://mas.to) and seeing if the translate links are visible there. If they're not on the website either, then it is possible that your server has switched them off as they cost the server money to run.

Your bookmarks are stored on the server, so no matter what happens to a particular app you'll always be able to access your bookmarks by logging in on another app or on your server's website.

I had asked my administrator to look into the translation situation. Was issued a work ticket, and am waiting for a response. When I saw your post I decided to ask you about it, thinking it was maybe something simple in my settings. Guess not. Will wait for an answer.

To log in via the web:
1. Go to your server's website (for you that is https://mas.to)
2. Click on the "sign in" button
3. Enter the email address and password you used to sign up on Mastodon

It works just like the app but you use it through your web browser. The web version works particularly well on a computer, but you can also use it on phones and tablets.

I've recently noticed that mastodon.social displays the notice "Some replies from other servers are not displayed. Browse more on the original profile" at the bottom of a LOT of threads, including this one. Has this always been the case and I just didn't notice it before? Or has there been some mass defederation recently or some other explanation for this?

It might be that your server isn't running Elasticsearch, which is an add-on that lets users use multiple keywords.

You could ask your server admin if they have Elasticsearch installed?

If a post is over a certain length, Mastodon's web interface automatically shortens it behind a "read more" link in order to keep the timeline readable.

It isn't controlled by the person creating the post, it happens automatically on the server and/or app of the person reading the post.

Basically just post as normal, and the servers (and/or apps) of your followers will each decide how they display it.

p.s. It's not the word length that decides it but the number of lines. If you look at this thread of recommended video accounts each post in the thread is a standard length but because they're spread out over many lines it triggers "read more" on many servers and interfaces.

Nearest you can get to this on Mastodon or similar would be a CW, yeah...

Alternatively, if you want to do long text pieces on the Fediverse but control how they are displayed, you can use a WordPress blog and activate its ActivityPub compatibility. This makes it followable from Mastodon etc but also lets you control how your posts appear (full text, excerpt plus link, just the link). Ah, apologies! I try to write the site's articles for a general non-technical audience so if there's something confusing I will try to make it clearer.

"Client" is just a techy word for whatever you're using to access a service, usually an app but in this case it's your web browser.

The server (also known as an instance) is the place where you signed up for an account. In your case that's toad.social.

The tags work the same way wherever you put them in the post.

However, there is now a cosmetic change where if you put them at the very end of your post with a blank line between them and the content, they will be displayed a bit differently. The functionality remains the same though. 🙂

It's basically the same as email or as telephone networks:

You choose a provider, and that provider lets you stay in touch with people on other providers.

So for example if you sign up on Yahoo mail, you can email people on Gmail or Outlook or any other email service.

You choose a Fediverse server (in your case it's https://mas.to) and that lets you talk to me or anyone else on the Fediverse, because all the servers communicate with a common standard.

It depends on whether they have mentioned the content of the picture anywhere.

Ideally people should be describing pictures with alt text if they can, and the filter can look for words in the alt text too.

The filter can also look for words in the main body, hashtags and links.

I just submitted a report for a spammer. At the end of the report I get the option to forward the report to the instances of other people who were involved in the same post thread, which makes sense.

However, I was given the option to also forward the report to several instances that had no users participating in the thread. Any idea how that part of the list gets populated?

If the other instance is really bad, you might want to ask your admin to consider silencing/limiting it at the instance level?

This would allow you to keep your follows, but would prevent you seeing anyone from that instance that you're not following.

This would affect everyone on your instance though, so the admin would have to weigh that up when considering whether to do a silencing.

Where to you keep your half-clean clothing?

I'm trying to to find the balance between having an anti-clutter space for a clearer head versus not being wasteful about over washing things like button shirts or jeans which don't get used for a large portion of my day.

I used to throw them over my computer chair but I recently moved my computer out of my bedroom.

I think the best option is to hang them up in the closet so they can air out a little more than back in a drawer.

I just put things back in my closet. Eventually I'm too lazy to do that and throw it in the laundry bin. I live in a mostly cold climate though where I don't sweat excessively. I have the same routine in the summer but end up wearing things once, maybe twice depending on how much I've sweat

I think we focus on wealth inequality lately because we're all on the same page about income inequality, and also because a common argument against income inequality is that "but their income isn't that huge, they just have investments." Wealth inequality deals with that ackchyuallity.

You think everyone is on the same page about that? People hate on billionaires all the time, but seem to be way more nuanced about someone who just makes a lot from their actual job. (And mostly ignore or avoid people who make way less)

A actually haven't been back to Reddit, but that sounds about right.

A good chunk of NIMBYism falls under there too. Middle-class Karen doesn't want cheap apartments or a homeless shelter anywhere near her, but has no better suggestions. If she wins and you're one of the people who needs that, it leaves you in a weird Kafkaesque limbo where you're told you have rights, but you're not really allowed to exist.

in the second quarter, the top 20 per cent of Canadians held more than two-thirds of the country's wealth, averaging $3.4 million per household. By comparison, the bottom 40 per cent of Canadians accounted for only 2.8 per cent of Canada's wealth.

I'd love to see that broken down further. I'm guessing there's a bunch of really rich households at the top that skew the average.

You can always find a smaller and vastly wealthier subset, right until you're down to the single digits of people.

There's no dividing line like some people imagine, though; it's a continuous distribution that we're all somewhere (lower) on. Probably because it's produced by a random walk.

Without diving into the data behind this, I'm willing to bet that there's a plateau around the $1 million mark, caused by simply owning a detached home in certain markets.

It's a good thought, but I'd take that bet with you. Houses can be remortgaged, or alternately converted to a rental while you get a second place. I suspect any bump is pretty small because people just continue to accumulate if they can.

@Miroslav Hylš 🇺🇦 🇹🇼 Jak co, jak v čem. I v těch dělostřeleckých granátech se situace docela silně zlepšuje. Evropa samotná dnes vyrábí tolik granátů, kolik UA potřebuje na zadržování rusáků. A plány jsou na dvojnásobek. V USA se taky zvyšuje výroba. Není proč být zrovna z tohodle v depresích... 😉

@Miroslav Hylš 🇺🇦 🇹🇼 No jasně. A ten článek je dost kritický a zaslouženě. Ale to už se právě mění. Připravují a otevírají se nové linky. Na prach, nitrocelulózu, rozbušky, dokonce i doly na měď, atd.
Tyhle plány jsou pro USA(pro EU jsem to tu někde dával, ale nemůžu to teď najít) takové:

Aktuálně Evropa vyrobí těch granátů víc než USA.

Co se týče obrněnců, jsme schopni UA tím zaplavit(ale rozhodli jsme se, že ne 🙄). Horší situace je se střelami a raketami. Tam je elasticita výroby daleko menší. Ale i tam se zvyšuje.
